The Last Night - what is that song about?

Listening to LH right now, I actually enjoyed "The Last Night", but again I find it difficult to figure out what this specific song is supposed to tell me.

First, what is this "last night"? I have no idea.

Then the contradictional chorus:

"This is the last night, you have to be alone, I'll be standing right beside you if you can't make it on your own" - So, someone has to be alone (why???) and someone offers help in the same moment, doesn't make too much sense but ok.

But then:
"So walk with me please, help me to be strong, I'll be the shoulder you can lean on when everybody's gone. This is the last night, you'll have to be alone." - So what? That part is totally confusing and contradictional. Seems like a schizophrenic talking. You can't tell someone to stay alone, then demand to follow you, then ask for help, then offer your help, then again tell to stay alone.

Can you help me out of here? It's not the greatest song in the world, but I would really like to know what it#s about.

It was written during a drug-induced haze, so that's why it didn't make sense! :)

Well this record was heavily influenced by what was going on with the band, specifically Richie and David. I think the song has got to do with them. David went through a divorce, so when someone leaves you feel alone because i know i did with the breakups i had. Then with Richie his divorce, his breakup with denise, his father's death, Rehab, so Richie definately felt alone. So Jon was basically saying you don't have to be alone me and the rest of the guys are here for you. Your other family(the band). hasn't left you. You don't have to be alone no more. At least thats my take on it.

I think it has summit to do with Close Encounters Of The Third Kind.

Not long til the Earth is gone.

Oh yeah, I see, smoking a joint sometimes really helps, doesn't it?

Isn't the lyric "This is the last night you'll have to be alone"? In other words, you were alone but not anymore?

As for the rest of it, it's the "all for one and one for all" sentiment, helping each other out, etc.

Yeah right, it's "You'll have to be alone". Makes a little difference. So I figured out the theme, mainly Jon helping (probably) Richie out after he ended up alone with his father gone and the divorce and split up.
But what is that "last night" itself about?

Maybe because it's the nights when you feel lonely?
During the day you are in contact with people and when you come home there's nobody waiting for you...

Just my two cents.

Not every song has some deep underlying context. It's a Bon Jovi-by-numbers filler, where boy wants to be more to girl. Simple.

I was conjuring an insult up in my mind but luckily for you your signature happens to be a lyric of an awesome song.
