Munich & Lepizig review + photos
Here is my short review of the Munich and Leipzig gigs, my 3rd and 4th Bon Jovi gigs respectively, after two in Milton Keynes in 2006. For both shows I had front of stage tickets, for the one in Leipzig bought through Backstage.
Munich: I arrived at Olympiastadion at 18 and was surprised to see that there have been by far not as many people as I have expected to be in the Golden Circle, which is good for anyone who doesn't want to queue early. As far as support is concerned I wish I knew what the song’s were about, maybe then I could enjoy them more. And they seemed to have some organizational problems as well, especially in Lepizig, when one guitar and one keyboard weren’t connected properly or whatever, but someone from their crew needed to come on stage twice to fix it and make them be heard. Not very professional really. I followed the setlists from the tour but didn’t listen to anything on Youtube just to make Bon Jovi surprise me. And it didn’t take long because I didn’t expect Lost Highway to be a good opener and it works really really well. The band seemed to enjoy the show, I have only two shows that I’ve been to to compare with, but in Munich Jon was in a fantastic mood and my impression was, he was more into the concert than in MK two years ago. I’m happy they played the original version of Always and I think Jon mastered it really well. Another surprise was how much people in front of the stage, and the band too, liked Whole Lot of Leavin’. I don’t really like this song but it did sound quite good during both shows. The two highlights of the evening for me were obviously Hey God (I just couldn’t believe when Jon said they would be playing it) and Blaze of Glory, as I’ve always wanted to hear it being played live. Faith was quite early in the set, too early for me, but it’s nice to see Richie running across the stage during the solos. I don’t know why they won’t stop playing Who Says You Can’t Go Home, at least the “It’s allrights” have been reduced to 30 seconds instead of repeating it for 2 minutes. The encore was ok, but as concert in Hamburg proved it can definitely be better. Overall it was a very good performance and the fans have been absolutely amazing, the Mexican wave before the concert, singing I’ll be There For You before the encore. No wonder Jon likes playing in Munich so much. Leipzig: I arrived at the stadium shortly before 15 and picked up my tickets and we were let in about 30 minutes later. There were LOTS of empty seats just before the start of the concert (I just wonder why they won’t play in Berlin, much bigger city and hence better chances to sell more tickets) so during Lost Highway I paid close attention to Jon to see if he was disappointed. There was nothing that I could see there but maybe it’s also because the press have been there and he had to be all smiles. I was very happy to hear Wild In The Streets as it was the first sign that they did change the setlist. You Give Love A Bad Name was played 5th which was a nice change too. I’m not sure after which song, but definitely not before Bad Name, they changed the setlist. Some guy ran onto the stage and changed Jon’s setlist, I immediately looked at Richie and he seemed to be kind of confused about this, but that might have been just my impression. You got the feeling time was passing by too fast for a Bon Jovi concert, no interaction between Jon and the stadium, except the first few rows. I was standing in the eight row and I could see that all the band, including Jon, have enjoyed the concert. During I think Who Says You Can’t Go Home Lorenza and Richie appeared to be flirting with each other, Jon made a very funny face as if wanting to say “I’m not saying anything, but there must be something going on between the two”:) Highlight of the evening was These Days and that for the encore Jon went out wearing German football national team jersey. The encore was WAY too short, they must have been tired, but to play only two songs?! How difficult for them would be to play another one? Hope they will keep up bringing the encores like in Hamburg. I thought that they would come out once again as after Wanted the crowd went really wild, I thought it was much louder than after they have left the stage in Munich, but they didn’t. To sum up: if you still don’t know whether to go or not then GO. Jon sounds very well, Richie is in great form, they all seem to have much fun playing and mix the sets quite nicely. |
