Coldplay - What is with them?

I suppose I just don't "get" them. Why are they so popular? Their music is bland, boring and depressing. Chris Martin is an egotistical dick. What am I missing with them?

crashed 06-14-2008 12:52 PM

No idea.

It seems everything they do, they're hailed as "musical geniuses".

The only song I like is Clocks, but even with that, the lyrics are daft.

I think it's just the usual media thing - they tell ppl they're great so ppl think they must be and have to listen to them.

Or something like that.

Don't know why - they're not exactly very rock'n'roll.

crashed 06-14-2008 01:08 PM

No, never said it was either - Jovi as a band are - but LH wasn't and was never meant to be. But this is a Coldplay thread so I'm just going to talk about them.

What really amazes me is how arrogant Chris Martin is. I remember the first ever interview I read with them in Q years back and he actually said something like "we'll never be up there with the likes of Bon Jovi", but now he thinks he walks on water and has the biggest band in the world.

Which, erm, they don't really - but the media seem determined to turn them into it.

jade4jovi 06-14-2008 02:06 PM

I love them, great band. Their songs are meaningful...I don't see them as dull at all. Sure, some of them are slightly depressing, but hey. I think they are one of the best.

Captain Walrus 06-14-2008 02:11 PM

I like the music I've heard from them (like, all the singles after their first album ... Yellow and Trouble never really did anything for me), but not enough to actually buy anything of theirs. They're listenable enough, they've got some fairly decent hooks, and songs like The Scientist are genuinely moving. That's about as far as I go though, they're not IMO nearly exciting enough to get more of a reaction out of me, not when I've got stuff like Jeff Buckley or Damien Rice to listen to instead, and not when I probably should check out more Radiohead stuff and see what the fuss is about there

Goldsausage 06-14-2008 02:14 PM

A don't mind a few songs but um yeah, I don't really get them either :/

jade4jovi 06-14-2008 02:17 PM

Um, what is there not to get? lol

Jim Bon Jovi 06-14-2008 03:06 PM

easy to listen to inoffensive (or bland if you must) music appeals to a massive range of people.

amy winehouse anyone? bryan adams, even bon jovi... it's coffee table music anyone can "get" there's not much effort needed to listen and appreciate them as opposed to someone like say floyd or radiohead where there's alot more to their music than just 4 chord pop songs.

that's pretty much it.

walrus what you need to do right now is: go to amazon and buy the bends. wait for it to arrive, listen, thank me.

Goldsausage 06-14-2008 03:08 PM

Oh Pink Floyd, they just take me to a whole new world. Love 'em.

Chica Guacamole 06-14-2008 10:33 PM

The only way I can listen to Coldplay is after a lot of tequilla

Javier 06-15-2008 04:03 AM

They're cool, an ex-girlfriend burned me a mix cd with a bunch of their songs. Most of them are cool to listenable.

Magoo 06-15-2008 04:52 AM

I see it's a pretty mixed thread here, but I think Coldplay are fantastic. Listening to the new album for the umpteenth time right now. It seems like their music and lyrics have matured greatly on Viva la Vida. A fantastic album.

Dave 1986 06-15-2008 03:41 PM

Coldplay - What is with them?

I think what people don't 'get' about Coldplay is how they can be so popular and how everytime they have an album out, they're EVERYWHERE, when really, their music is nothing special. It's ok, it's listenable and it's extremely middle of the road, so on that sense most people can enjoy it.

liljovi93 06-15-2008 04:05 PM

I like coldplay.
There music is catchy and they seem to pick the right singles to bring out

yomamasofat 06-15-2008 04:11 PM

You are not the only one. I think they suck too.

RyanBounce04 06-15-2008 07:06 PM

I thought they sucked to for the longest time believe it or not. Slowly they grew on me and right after Rush of Blood was released I was instantly grabbed. I couldn't agree more though, their music can be heard as boring and bland. With the meaning behind the songs and really laying down and listening to some of them really takes everything into perspective. They are great. They are great at what they do. Go to a live show and your perspective might change. It certainly opened up some new doors with their music because they were fantastic.

The Scientist is beautiful.

That and In My Place, was played at my friend's memorial at school. When we was just 15. :( So hard to listen to now...but both brilliant songs. Along with plenty other songs they have done.

Boo @ people not liking them.

zero_zero_UFO 06-15-2008 07:38 PM

i really don't like them either.

was reading a review yesterday and the critic was saying how they turn people into 'pod people', even though their music is boring loads and loads of people buy the albums. thought that was quite funny.

just bland and ubiquitous....and they spawned crap like James Blunt, Keane and other tosh like that.

Mr Bluesman 06-16-2008 12:15 AM

As Jim said, they are easy to listen to. It's really that simple. It doesn't take much to get into them, just put on a cd and I'm positive there's something there for every listener. The new album is class. Good live band too.

Try and see past the 'Chris Martin is a twat' thing.

jade4jovi 06-16-2008 12:20 AM

Why is Chris Martin a twat?!

I've always liked him, because he seems so down-to-earth. And..."normal"

You can just imagine him being the local in the pub, or something.

Mr Bluesman 06-16-2008 12:30 AM

Very true. But trying to beat up photographers and walking out of interviews makes people have their doubts.

Neurotica80 06-16-2008 12:36 AM

I would see them live if only to hear Fix you. One of my best songs ever.

Yvonne 06-16-2008 12:40 AM

I like some of there older stuff but am more of a fan of the last 2 albums.

liljovi93 06-16-2008 12:44 AM

I've always liked Chris Martin but lately he seems to big for his boots.

in no particular order:

bono
bob geldof
music critics
axl rose

jade4jovi 06-16-2008 03:52 AM

What you saying about Bono?!!?????????!?!!?

Actually, I like all 3 of them. :(

I was gonna say the exact same thing. But without Bob Geldof.

jade4jovi 06-16-2008 03:53 AM

So, Bono tries to do right in the world...and this is how he gets treated. :(

He's awesome.

he's a pontificating arse.

cool band but he could do with shutting the **** up now and again.

jade4jovi 06-16-2008 03:55 AM

He's trying to make a difference, and use his fame to do so. Like a lot more "celebs" should. At least he actually cares.

Goldsausage 06-16-2008 04:04 AM

Hey Jim, sssh. She's taking it out on me.

Couldn't have said it much better myself. If Coldplay are still around in 10 years time I predict Chris Martin will over take Bono in twattyness.

My opinions of U2 and Coldplay are very similar. I'm trying to enjoy Coldplay for the time being, until they start spurting out rubbish like How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb.

Il'll add Thom Yorke from Radiohead to that list. I read a review of one of their concerts, apparently he told the crowd they should have come on bikes and to save the planet etc etc. F that If I go to a gig I dont need a lecture on the ways of the world!!

Goldsausage 06-16-2008 02:40 PM

Really? Then they should play acoustic guitars and not electric. Y'know, to save electricity and all.

Mr Bluesman 06-16-2008 03:16 PM

I'm all happy with celebs doing their bit for the world, it pleases me to see it happening. But they need to draw a line at times. I couldn't be doing with Bono ramming 3rd world poverty down my neck after having paid 60 odd quid for a ticket to one of his shows. I pay money for shows to be entertained, not lectured.

jade4jovi 06-16-2008 03:19 PM

Well, us fans don't mind him doing that. :) It brings something to the show. He also does it in an entertaining way. He's a hero...I don't care what anybody says.

Mr Bluesman 06-16-2008 03:30 PM

I'm a big fan of both Coldplay and U2. And as I mentioned before, Coldplay is yet to get too much like U2 in the sense that they're preaching during live shows but if they were to get like this I'd have a problem with it. It's not entertaining, it's annoying.

I think it's great some of the work Bono does, I really do, but he isn't a hero and he certainly won't end poverty no matter how much he appears to believe he will. He isn't the only person in this world to do charity work, there are a lot of 'heros' that fail to get recognised.

Supersonic 06-16-2008 03:32 PM

Aloha !

He's not a hero. He's an annoying twat with a falsetto voice and rubbish piano music. If you're in a band and you're most played in supermarkets you're doing it wrong. ****ing awful band.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

bingo.

ive been to some overblown pompous gigs in my time but nothing even came close to u2 showing us videos of starving orphans and bono yapping on as if he was the dalai lama.

we know the script bono but just stfu and do what we're paying you to do.

radiohead actually go to much expense on their own backs to make their tours carbon neutral.

bono on the other hand flies his hats around in private jets.
