Thief Of Hearts
Yay or Nay?
I like it, don't think it's great. It's like the music doesn't match up with the darkness of the lyrics. I dig it lyrically and musically it sounds like a cross between Springsteen and Petty to me which is good but somehow it just doesn't mesh as well as it should. It's hard not to compare it to Last Man Standing since they both were released at the same time, maybe as a song on a regular album it would be a highlight. |
Total yay from me. Very Petty-like, but in the vein of Tom's solo stuff moreso than the Heartbreakers work. Lyrically good, musically good, and I prefer to the original version of LMS.

Last Man Standing is in itself very reminescent of Petty's The Last DJ although I think LMS came first.
I may be wrong, love both songs either way. |
Yay for me. The original Last Man Standing was a complete turd, so this song is a relief.

Album came out in '02. And the acoustic LMS has never done it for me. It's supposed to be an angry song, and the HAND version pulls that off so much better IMO. |
Out of all the songs recorded for TLFR, this one is one of my favourites. Too bad it wasn't released on the actual album, as it would make it slightly more listenable.

I before E except after C.:p
Anyway I like this song.... Though it always brings a little smile to my face and I'm not sure if it's meant to. Stalk much? ;) |
Not a grand song, but I enjoy it. Love the mix of dark lyrics and happy melody. Together with LMS it would have made TLFR much much better. The album needs a fast song at the end - this was it.

Of course it sounds Petty-ish, the main "Hey baby" hook is identical to the one in I Won't Back Down!
I agree that the melody doesn't quite fit the tone of the lyrics. Generally the song is melodically quite pleasing, but that's about it .... it's not overly impressive IMO |
yeah its a good song, i prefer LMS though.
