ALL users: Please Read

Dear JoviTalk users,

After a lengthy discussion with fellow moderators, we have decided to create a opinion poll for the users of this message board.

As many of you will have noticed, the forums has become increasingly unwelcome of late, due to a certain amount of users spamming, talking about sex, throwing insults, amongst many other things. A lot of users have suggested that they should take their chats to PM's or to MSN, if they want to chat about things. They have clearly ignored this request, even from moderators, so this is a poll for YOU to decide the best course of action.

Please Note: Any spam in THIS thread WILL be removed.

Please select one of the two options above, and feel free to post your opinions on the matter. Your votes will NOT be shown to other users.

Which would be the best way forward for YOU?

Thank You for your time.
The Moderator Team.

Peterson 07-09-2008 11:27 PM

Sorry to create more work for you guys, but I voted for posts being moderated.

Kathleen 07-09-2008 11:57 PM

I also voted to clean up the board. I don't think the mods need to be harsh about it but I do think something should be done to contain the thread hijacking. Clearly nice suggestions like "take to to pm or msn" don't work.

Thanks Kev

Crushgen24/88 07-10-2008 12:04 AM

I'm abstaining from voting, mainly because it's way too black and white for me.
Those two options make it seem like the board has to be either a police state, or the lawless Wild West.
While I don't like the thread hijacking, and think something has to be done about it, but eliminating every single bit of incidental personal conversation isn't the answer either IMO. That would eliminate a lot of what makes this board special in the first place.

I agree.

I know I'm been doing the "hijacking" too. But like I said, I'm trying my hardest to stop - and have pretty much stopped it all. So, might seem a bit cheeky to some people for me to say my opinion on this. But in all realness, personal sh!t aside - I agree with this comment fully. I think the board should be moderated more. I think if threads get ridiculousy off topic, than yes, delete some posts. But it would be silly, and a shame IMO, to just delete any thing that may be slightly personal or off topic. It would be silly to say, nobody can say anything that is off topic, or personal, and that's that! This board is nice because of the freedom, I think. We're known to be able to be more free with what we say. Unlike some other boards (Backstage for example) that is very much rescricted. I think it would be a shame, to make it become something like that...it really would. And I think going too far that way, would also put people off coming on here, certainly. But, I also think people need to start listenign more. I did as soon as Mousebounce asked me nicely to stop. It's obviously annoying a lot of people, and if I can tone it down, so can other people. It's quite offensive to me, when I'm trying, but then there's still 2 or 3 others still going at it.

There's my unbiased views!

SmirkSteve 07-10-2008 12:25 AM

What Kev posted says that spam will be removed - I interperet that to mean that not all conversation will be removed but at the point it takes over the thread (becoming spam) in an off topic manner then it will, or if it is offensive then it will. I think we trust the mods enough to use common sense, they haven't let us down so far.

Eastwick 07-10-2008 12:43 AM

I love democracy :D

Seems like a big job to moderate all spam, but if ya can do it, it would have been much appreciated.

yeah i agree with you there , like when the thread about "why was hey god dropped" turned into Always Vs Bed Of Roses im sure that would be fine but it's more the "off off topic" things

Grypweed 07-10-2008 07:56 AM

OK OK, I quit. Even Jade is getting pissed off by it now. I feel so ashamed :(

Mods don't have to worry, Oli won't spam if he's got nobody to spam with :) Unless he and his fans get together and take over... in which case, may God be with you all.

kenobi_on_a_prayer 07-10-2008 08:15 AM

Politely asking them to stop should be the first step.;)

If people are rude enough to conduct a private conversation in a thread, disrupting it, why should they expect any courtesy in return?

They have been - politely or otherwise - asked to stop a good many times.

Supersonic 07-10-2008 12:32 PM

Aloha !

Just kill them. Simple. Either that or let me moderate the board. 8)

Aw Jem, your balls have shrivelled up again :( Oh well, there goes my partners in . But mark my words Jovitalk and mark them well - I will be back

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 01:31 PM

Oh yeah, right whilst you guys are all in complaining mood I think I should return the favour.

SEB'S SIGNATURE. It's very disturbing to see such pictures imprinted to my very young, innocent eyes.

Having to scroll down the page and seeing naked ladies all the time is annoying. And sometimes they're not even hot, they're just blonde bimbo's.

Rant over. I'll be back with another petty complain later

Grypweed 07-10-2008 01:32 PM

I told you I don't like being on people's bad sides! But while I'm here, let me say this:

Killing people never solved nothing.

And Goldman, are you going somewhere?

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 01:33 PM

I am Jem, I am taking a break from JT.

How can you find Seb's sig offensive when yours is asking for a Blowjob?

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 01:45 PM

I don't know what a blowjob is. I heard someone say it in class once and I picked it up.

It means hoovering doesn't it? That's why I added the "it's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it" to it the other day.

Iceman 07-10-2008 03:41 PM

BJ? I could have someone demonstrate it on me, any volunteers? Kenobi? Jade? :D

Back to the topic...

Why don't you just have Peter update the board software to get rid of the spammers? If the spam is too much for the mods to handle, that's an easy way to get rid of it.

Ice

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 03:46 PM

Here my friends I present to you a little example of how easy, and unintentional, it can be to go off-topic...

http://www.drycounty.com/jovitalk/sh...d=1#post861358

Thomas Anderson 07-10-2008 03:50 PM

No, I wouldn't have replied again because I simply checked Google for it - and that isn't the kind of topic that gets updated like a setlist thread anyway! People will just reply with the likes of "I like that" and not get into a discussion which is somehow ruined by another comment! You're just looking for excuses to spam!!

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 03:56 PM

<_< I'm not looking for excuse to spam, I was just proving how easy it is to reply. You couuld easily have replied to me in a PM or something - OR TOLD ME TO TELL YOU IN THE MOVIE SECTION.

So maybe that example wouldn't have gone on for pages and pages but others do.

Thomas Anderson 07-10-2008 03:57 PM

You don't get it - that thread wasn't one in which any kind of discussion was going on, so even off-topic posting doesn't cause disruption! People here are complaining about off-topic discussion in threads where an actual discussion is going on, and thus the off-topic stuff disrupts it and makes it impossible to follow the real discussion!

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 03:59 PM

Well if you were in a more active thread I would have said it then, you still would have replied.

Grypweed 07-10-2008 04:07 PM

I very much like Ice's idea.

But I think Kev will be upset when he comes back.

No - I would have been more considerate to others who were trying to have a discussion.

Don't tell me what you would do. You so would have still replied.

Look, I caught you out for the sake of the argument not to be mean, don't take it to heart. You were just the easiest to catch out.

Thomas Anderson 07-10-2008 04:28 PM

For ****s sake - it wasn't a thread that mattered! And it was a thread I had started to begin with anyway! I wouldn't do it in the setlist threads or any kind of serious discussion! I've been posting on this board for more than 6 years already so I know a lot of people here, know how to conduct myself and anyone that knows me would know I'm not one to take threads off-topic! We have the F&G forum for that - in fact, it's the reason it was created a few years ago!

Thomas Anderson 07-10-2008 04:30 PM

...and before it is even suggested, this is not off-topic as we are discussing what constitutes spam!

So you've had this problem before?

I'm not angry - if I were angry I'd not be sat at my pc, believe me! I'm just trying to explain something to you which you don't seem to grasp - off-topic chat is only spam when it is in a serious thread, when it causes disruption!

Yes! Even Kev himself used to spam like this, and ended up creating a chat thread, as did I and as did a few other people. They don't get used much anymore but you can still find them if you look.

Goldsausage 07-10-2008 04:32 PM

Well I think Jem and I (mainly me) are being mistreated.

There are worse things out there - THESEDAYS2005 INSULTING DEB IN EVERY THREAD FOR EXAMPLE.

At least Jem and I are just talking, he's being off-topic and insulting other members yet there's no polls about him.

Kev did and he's a mod?!

Jem - I still have a chance!

How about creating one for Jade, Oli and Jem?

And if they spam anywhere else it gets deleted?

Grypweed 07-10-2008 04:34 PM

Jade already created one, thank you very much.

He is one of the few people who have been a constant nuisance here and I'm not sure why, like born-to-run, he wasn't banned long ago - but that's another issue. The problem here is that we in the middle of a tour and the setlist threads are un-readable for the play-by-plays each night due to constant chatter which could be posted elsewhere. I and many others gave up even trying to read those threads due to it.

He wasn't always a mod.

'Tis why he said he still has a chance ;)

You know, he's a good mod, responsible. Make him one and all your troubles will go away.

But in all seriousness, I thought the mutilation of the PBP threads had stopped, and that's what everyone still seems to be complaining about. But then one or two people say they don't mind it in there.

It's too much for my little brain to handle I'm afraid.

But are we (Oli) as disliked as BTR and TD2005? Cause I despised them, so it would make me sad.
