Thank the Lord (who happens to be Bruce, anyway) that they didn't cut out Youngstown. That would have killed my spirit.

Agreed Youngstown is one of the finest.

And it's possible that it's a typo and Rosie is not left out. We shall see I guess.

It really is. Whilst a lot (and I mean, a hell of a lot) of Bruce songs drop in and out of my Top 10 weekly, Youngstown is one of the few that is fixed. The studio version is great and the electric version on Live In NYC is mind-blowing.

Also, I really adore the following lyrics from the song and it's one of my all time favourite Bruce lyrics:

When I die I don't want no part of heaven
I'd not do heaven's work well
I pray the Devil comes and takes me to stand
In the fiery furnaces of hell

He delivers it with such passion in every live version I hear.

I am wondering, if he wasnt at his best, then why deciding to release this show on DVD ?
I am looking forward to it as well though !

I salute you,

Probably because the filming had been decided before the date. I don't know for sure, but all this has to be planned ahead of time - and nobody knows when you're not going to be at your best.

Bruce was at his best during the last 2 MSG shows. WIESS or The River would have made SUPERB DVDs and I too was hoping it would have been one of them released. They never do ask me though :(

Thunderstrucker 04-21-2010 12:17 AM

Those concerts would have been epic indeed. Most of the tracks of the upcoming DVD are already on other DVD's or less epic then having the full River album live on DVD.

A DVD-boxset likes the Stones have done twice would be nice for Springsteen to do as well. There must be enough in the vaults.

I salute you,
TS

Anyone here own The Video Anthlogy DVD?

Just wondering - obviously it has music videos on there - but there is two discs worth. Are they all music videos or are some of them live performances?
And when I mean live performances I don't mean live music videos :p I know there's one of Tom Joad from the Jay Leno show, anymore?

The DVD wasn't clear.

Thanks in advance.

You Sir, are now going to be held responsible for encouraging me to spend money THAT I REALLY CAN'T SPEND on a Bruce Springsteen DVD.

In the short term I shall love you for it, in the long term maybe not so.

Oli its well worth buying. End of

Mongoose 04-25-2010 04:56 PM

Hmm, I watched the Hard Rock show on Sky Arts (or at least the four songs they showed) the other day. Wish I hadn't bothered now!

Edit; to add not because its crap but because of the blu ray!

Does Bruc have some kind of sweating disease??
honestly the guy is like two songs in and he's dripping in sweat from his forehead all the way down to his jeans. At first I thought, damn it must be kinda hot, but then the dude turned around and his ass was like covered up in sweat like he had sit on a coke or something.....

First of, which show is this?

And I'm pretty sure he's got guys backstage throwing water over him every couple of songs to stop him from dehydrating. At least, that's the conclusion I came to after watching Live In Barcelona for the first time and seeing his entire back drenched.

He always has that sponge close by and drenches himself with it. I think he does sweat a crazy amount because he gives so much on stage but not that much!

I have watched him take a bottle of water - drink a few glugs - and then pour the rest over his head to cool down.

And as Butters said - he keeps that sponge in the bucket close by too.

Perhaps a hose bibb onstage would help :p

Javier 04-25-2010 10:50 PM

didn't notice the sponge thing....

I believe he's talking about the hyde park gig?

hometownboy 04-25-2010 11:01 PM

Just reminding everyone :p I caught Bruce's sponge at Glastonbury lol

Javier 04-25-2010 11:04 PM

I don't think t was Hyde PArk.
It was definetly an outdoor European show though, it was from the Magic tour I think....

Oh yeah I bought a couple more Bruce albums the other day, I'm slowly but surely owning them all.

HUMAN TOUCH
I always held back off buying this album, not because it's a lame album, but because the cover really pisses me off. I understand Bruce's sister did the artwork for Human Touch and Lucky Town? Never let her in charge of that job again. However, it is nice to finally have Soul Rider and Gloria's Eyes on CD.

NEBRASKA
It was the only Bruce album left in the store that I didn't have, they have barely any Bruce albums in there. However, at least I was stuck with the masterful Nebraska :D

Thunderstrucker 04-26-2010 02:35 PM

I own both albums already but I hardly listen to them.
Human Touch I yet have to 'discover' and Nebraska is Springsteens most depressive album and I cannot say that I listen to the album a lot because of that and also because of the album being recorded in low quality (in my opinion)

I salute you,
TS

The Ghost Of Tom Joad is Springsteen's most depressive album.

I love the low quality of Nebraska, one of the main reasons I love it. It adds to the ambiance of the record. I'm trying to imagine how the title track, Atlantic City, Reason To Believe and Johnny 99 would sound were they recorded today and I regret to say it sounds horrible.

Thunderstrucker 04-26-2010 03:09 PM

IF it would be recorded this day and IF it would sound like Devils & Dust then I would definitely listen to it more.

I salute you,
TS

Ferret 04-26-2010 06:48 PM

I think Nebraska is by far Bruce's best album.

Thunderstrucker 04-26-2010 06:51 PM

I do not share that opinion (yet)

I salute you,
TS

Goldsausage 04-26-2010 07:05 PM

I was listening to Nebraska whilst walking up town today (it was a dark and cloudy day, so it was the perfect time).

And throughout the entire time I was thinking "Man, Thunderstrucker? More like Blunderstrucker, this album is even more great than I remember it being!"

milomom 04-26-2010 07:09 PM

I've said this before. Nebraska is the album that caused me to NOT be a Bruce fan for 25 years or so. I bought it in college, hated it and never went back to try again until I met Kathleen. I still don't care for it. I like the songs that have been "electrified" and are played at the shows, but I never feel the need to listen to them as they were recorded.

You make me sick.

Also, why did you buy it in college? Seems like an odd album to buy for a non-Springsteen fan :p

Oh and tbh - I hated Tunnel Of Love, Devils & Dust and We Shall Overcome for a long time too so, I'm not much better :(

I agree with that quote. It's the only Bruce album that I just can't love or even get into. Nebraska still has some hope left - Tom Joad has absolutely none.

And yet some of the songs that Bruce plays electric now - such as the title track and Youngstown will blow you away during a show. I just can't listen to the album as it was recorded.

Indeed. The only songs I can listen to are the title track, Youngstown (****ing brilliant), Highway 29 and My Best Was Never Good Enough.

But man, as you say, there's no hope left at all. None of the characters seem to be able to find "reason to believe".

I could probably listen to the other songs on their own, like in a playlist, but the album in full will have be tieing a rope around my neck and standing on top of a stool.

And Tom Joad and Youngstown electric...God, how brilliant. Particulary Youngstown.

Remember how old I am, Oli. When Nebraska was released in September 1982, I was a sophomore in college/university. It was a new album by someone that I'd never paid much attention to but lots of people talked about . . . so I bought it.

Oh, so you were a sheep ;) Just kiddin'.

So when you got into Bruce all these years later (man, it must piss you off to think of all those shows you missed out on :() did you still have your old copy of Nebraska or did you have to buy a new one? If you even have it all.

Sorry, for some reason I find these sort of things interesting.

First of all, I bought that copy of Nebraska on the fabulous, enduring format of cassette, so even if I'd still had it, it wouldn't have been of any use. But no, I'd long since tossed it out. And yes, I bought another copy. I was curious to see what I thought of it now, but I'd have had to buy it anyway just to complete the collection.

And I do wonder what I'd have thought about the earlier albums if I'd bought one of those instead. I love Born to Run, Darkness and The River now. But I might or might not have back then. I wasn't into music at all. It was just something to play in the background now and then. I bought very little and tended to just listen to the radio. And I didn't go to concerts either. I think I went to one during 4 years at the University of Missouri and 1 at the University of Maryland. This music obsession is my mid-life crisis. Some people buy a convertible or trade in the spouse on a younger model. I discovered tunes. :D

Oh crap yeah, you guys didn't have CD's back then. I forget ;)

Yeah, I don't think it'd have mattered which album you bought to be honest. I think you have to be at a certain point in your life to "get" Springsteen and obviously it comes to people at different times. Mine was at the age of 17, yours is obviously now, some people could be 60 when they finally click and others just 13.

It's a curious thing.

Late 04-26-2010 09:28 PM

EDIT:

Maybe I should learn to read the thread before posting and making myself look like a daft prick. :p

Anyways...I'm pretty excited about the new DVD although some of the shows in Autumn with full albums could've been potential choices. Bruce fans are in a pretty special position to be able to complain about a release like this. ;)
