That's one album I never really got into, there are some amazing tracks on there but I never really bonded with it.

I think I may have to revisit.

That is the album that got me hooked on Bruce in the first place. I listen to it regularly still. All songs are special.

Thunderstrucker 07-07-2010 08:53 AM

When I turned on the River of Glastonbury I hoped to hear the version like they did on the New York DVD. This version is less magical for me because I miss the awesome sax-intro.

I salute you,
TS

Same here. There's no fault with perfect songs like The River and Point Blank but damn, I really don't see the love for this album. I think it's mainly the second disc I don't like too (except for Point Blank and I'm A Rocker), I can't even recall how most of the songs go, even after repeat listenings.

But to be honest, I am kind of glad that there is a Bruce Springsteen album I can't get into, the whole "everything Bruce has released is perfect!" is not something I ever feel comfortable with thinking :p

C'monFeet 07-07-2010 06:56 PM

Four songs into London Calling, I'm struck by

1 - How much fun the band is having (Love the "on stage" camera work)
2 - How clear the mix is - love how strong the keyboards are coming through, but there's so much detail
3 - The boring London crowd

It is right up there with what I call my favorite albums. The River show last November was the closest thing I have ever had to a religious experience. Fortunately for me we got a fantastic recording and someone else got an ALD/IEM recording and the mix is perfect :)

I don't have the DVD yet but from personal experience I can confirm that the crowd were totally shit. So much for Oli telling me Bruce makes crowds go insane everywhere :D

i'm more than happy with the new dvd. nice to have pro-footage 'racing in the street' - a true masterpiece.

I didn't realise the living dead attended Hyde Park.

They didn't when Pearl Jam or Neil Young played. However, they made a shock reappearance at Paul McCartney :o What's going on you think?

That's probably my biggest concert regret. Had I not been been booked in Atlantic City that weekend, with all the AAR fanclub stuff booked up, I would have spent anything to be at that show. Especially since I've only gotten 2 River songs live.

I think they're getting the legends mixed up with the legend-wannabes :o

Basically gotta laugh at anything that implies Neil's anything less than a true legend.

Yeah I could kick myself for not going either even though there were ok prices on the flights and good tickets to be had. However over the past 29 years of being a Bruce fan I've managed to get 15 out of the 20 songs but it still would have been awesome to have been there. So glad we got the DVD and awesome audio

Just to hope back to this for a second, I actually posted this on my Facebook a while ago (anyone whose FB or Twitter friends with me knows I rip Beck apart very often) and bitched about how dumb he is for never reading the lyrics, and a person responded:
"You actually thought Glenn Beck could read? The real shame here is on you."

1) Why do you like him/them?

For me first and for-mostly it's his live act that drew me in. The first DVD I saw was (Barcelona 2002) I just sat in my seat frozen for two hours solid. I never felt such a range of emotions while watching a musical act, from the inspirational The Rising to the pure fun of Prove it all night then onto the tear jerking Empty Sky. I was sold, all within the opening four songs. I smiled to myself and knew I'd just found something extraordinary.

So for me it's the range of emotions he can bring out in me. I've never once doubted his integrity either and I know his song writing comes from somewhere deep inside of him.

2) Best album?

Darkness On The Edge Of Town

This album feels so cinematic and full of raw power. You can hear the hunger in his voice and fire in his belly. Not a single filler track, just wall to wall genius.

3) Best Song?

Badlands

I sing the lyrics to this song almost everyday, I don't even mean to it's just ingrained in my psyche. It's all about hope and breaking out of medicority, it's like a hymn to me.

4) Best gig you've seen?

I've only been to one show (Dublin last year) but it's the best show I've ever been to. Only people who see Bruce live can relate to the feelings you get at his shows, Religious is the only word to describe it.

*I think we need a Favourite member of The E Street Band Question.

Mine would be a split between Little Steven and The Mighty Max Weinberg :)

Thunderstrucker 07-13-2010 05:15 PM

The best album for me at the moment of him is BITUSA but I am currently listening more of his albums and try to get into them so this might change.

Best song, now thats a tough one.
I cannot pick one. I see you like Badlands a lot, the song does nothing to me apart of the whoo whoo whoo in the end ;)
Land of Hope and Dreams is an alltime favorite of mine, especially the live version of the Barcalona dvd is played a lot. The 'People Get Ready' part of the end makes the song complete.

I only seen him once live and that was by far the best concert I been to. He was sick at that concert and it already was postponed to the day after the original date. He played only 2 hours. Highlights of the show were Gypsy Biker, Reason to Believe and Sinterklaas is Coming to Town. Santa Clause is Coming To Town made it's tourpremiere in Holland but because we have another fest in Holland at the start of December (Sinterklaas) he changed the lyrics a bit on stage which was awesome.

I salute you,
TS

Thunderstrucker 07-13-2010 11:58 PM

I ripped the audio of the hyde park dvd and listening to it quite a lot. Am really into 'Trapped' right now cause it fits the situation I am in. I really like the keyboard-melody which makes it a bit more tuneful and gives a lot of depth to the song in my opinion.

Ok, I will give up explaining what I mean now in my crappy English for tonight :D

I salute you,
TS

hometownboy 07-14-2010 12:32 AM

Man, your English isn't crappy at all!

The version of Trapped is brilliant as is the version of seeds!

Sami 07-15-2010 12:37 PM

Answering the questions of the first post on this thread.

1) Why do you like him/them?

I bought BITUSA by the time it was released. Such a classic album, all of the tracks are standout tracks. I´ve liked Bruce ever since.

2) Best album?

Don´t know if it´s BITUSA or Magic.

3) Best Song?

Because The Night

4) Best gig you've seen?

Seen him only once (Helsinki, Finland a few years ago). Great, great concert. I guess his concerts are always great.

Thunderstrucker 07-15-2010 12:39 PM

Just listened American Land of the Hyde Park DVD and I really like it when the band sets in for the last time on the D and when Bruce calls on to go to 'The Funky G' the band pauses a bit cause his announcement is late and Max just gives the good beat to get the band going again. Love it !

I salute you,
TS

A pity Trapped isn't written by Bruce ;)

TS

hometownboy 07-16-2010 02:47 AM

Haha I never said it was ;) didn't Jimmy Cliff release it? I might be completely wrong with that one though :p just because Bruce didn't write it, it doesn't take anything away from it.

Jim Bon Jovi 07-16-2010 02:54 AM

I'm reading a book just now called Written In My Soul which is interviews with about 30 songwriters dating from the mid-80s.

There's a couple of right bell ends on there that's heads are so far up their own arse it's unbelievable but Bruce is pretty humble about how he wrote about getting out of town and leaving the place behind and how he coped with when that actually happened to him etc...

Pete Towhnsend is an absolute cock on it and there's a great part in Keef's interview where he's saying he just sits and writes songs, he doesn't wait for an inspiration because the idea of some divine music being sent from above is stupid. The guy mentions that this is how Pete described where he gets his tunes from and Keef (rather politically might I add) rips him to shreds for being such a self absrobed cunt :D

Thunderstrucker 07-16-2010 09:51 AM

Haha. Yeah I believe some artists believe they are awesome ;)
And yes HTB, Jimmy Cliff wrote Trapped. I never heard of him before.

I salute you,
TS

Matthes 07-17-2010 12:30 AM

Lately I listen a lot to "Paradise" of the "The Rising" album. I such an emotional and moving song. It's so brillantly written because of the contrast which is shown. On the one side how the character smells, feels and brushs his girlfriend or daughter, so that you get a description of what life could be. And then on the other side the picture of the "empty paradise".

Am I right that the song is about a suicide bomber?

Tashjbj 07-19-2010 09:28 PM

Cant believe I never answered this one...

1) Why do you like him/them?

Classic performer and the original storyteller.. all his songs are great, deep and meaningful... amazing artist!

2) Best album?

Too hard!!! The River and the Rising

3) Best Song?

Tougher than the rest, Brilliant disguise, waiting on a sunny day and the River

4) Best gig you've seen?

Acoustic show in Rotterdam, I think in 2006... cant really remember now, but it was amazing!! He was brilliant in 2008 too in Amsterdam, ended on American Land and we saw Because the Night for the first time since 1972!!!

Thunderstrucker 07-19-2010 09:33 PM

Amsterdam was a making up for the concert on 1 december 2007 when he was sick. I think Amsterdam got 3-5 tour premieres and lasted 45 minutes longer then the december-concert.

Brilliant Disquise is indeed also a favorite of mine !

I salute you,
TS

Thunderstrucker 07-19-2010 09:51 PM

With you mentioning Brilliant Disguise I just listened it 4 times in a row and am hoping it will be on the live-dvd included in the Darkness Anniversary Box, I doubt it, but it's good to hope it ;)

I salute you,
TS

Tashjbj 07-19-2010 10:12 PM

Good on you!!! Love that song and cannot listen to it enough... also forgot to mention If I should fall behind and Secret Garden...

Goldsausage 07-23-2010 12:53 AM

I just heard the greatest song ever by Bruce, it was called Gypsy Woman.

30 seconds in and I was mesmorised.

Boy am I glad I downloaded Spotify this morning!

Thunderstrucker 07-23-2010 12:54 AM

Got Spotify too, never use it.

I salute you,
TS

Goldsausage 07-23-2010 01:02 AM

Well maybe if you did you would be listening to Gypsy Woman like I am right now and feeling like you're on a crazy, euphoric, slightly Pink-Floyd-esque high.

Thunderstrucker 07-23-2010 01:22 AM

I use iTunes to listen to all my fabulous albums. One big juke-box in high-quality ;)

I am in the Man's Job and Brilliant Disguise mood lately ;)

I salute you,
TS

Gypsy Woman is not a Bruce song - written by Curtis Mayfield I think. Bruce sang it on a tribute album of his (I'm flying by memory here - don't have time to google)

Not Old_Just Older 07-23-2010 02:11 AM

I'm in a Tunnel Of Love mood right now. God I love this album!

Not Old_Just Older 07-23-2010 03:53 AM

I just want to share some off my joy! I'm actually gonna visit NYC/NJ sometime next year. My wife have a friend who lives in NJ and he wants us to come over. It would be really nice to see all the places Springsteen writes about in his lyrics and all the places that are connected to Springsteen and off course Bon Jovi. Since my wife's friend isn't into Springsteen or Jovi it would be nice to meet up with someone who really is in a big way Kathleen Maybe?:) Someone who could give a little tour:) Anyway it would be nice to meet some jovitalkers who lives in the NYC/NJ area:)
