Rare Live Songs??? Really?? What's rare??
To me a rare song is something the band has played live less than 10 times EVER.
Songs that qualify: i want you if I was your mother fear cadillac man i wanna take you higher sylvia's mother here comes the sun bridge over troubled water freebird In my opinion a song isn't rare because it is a new version or the only time played on a certain tour. I wonder how many Rare songs they have played I am sure it is more than 20, maybe more than 50. What rare live songs can you add to the list? Dave |
Well, i'd say ones that they haven't played for a fair amount of time.
Most songs that haven't been played since TD really. Rare songs i would count as Hey God, Damned and stuff that only did come back this tour that were away for a couple of years. |
I am not trying to argue, just discuss.
To me it seems like over 90% of Bon Jovi's officially released catalog would be rare songs if played live then, to me that just ain't rare. That is not to say that I wouldn't be thrilled to hear any of the songs you mentioned, I would, but I don't think they are rare. Just opinions :) Dave |

I think 'rarity' is probably used a lot, when in actual fact the word 'surprise' is more appropriate.

Dave,
The songs you have listed above are rarities indeed. Going by your definition of songs that have been played 10 times or less during their career, I can think of: 1. We're An American Band 2. Lean On Me 3. Homebound Train ??? 4. You Had Me From Hello 5. Fields of Fire 6. Good Guys Don't Always Wear White 7. Lie To Me 8. Back in the USSR 9. Stick To Your Guns I'd say about half of the rarities according to your list and mine are covers and not Bon Jovi songs... My Take on it: The problem is that when you look at the Bounce Tour, the Have a Nice Day Tour and Lost Highway tours, for the most part, the setlists were very stagnant. When they did change, they were replaced with something that wasn't rare for example substituting "Captain Crash..." with "Radio....". So having said that, I think the definition of a rairty changes from decade to decade or from tour to tour. For instance, song like "Hey God" which was played frequently in 1995-1996, would be considered rare song now (at least to me) if it were to pop up in a setlist from the 2000s. According to Seb's site, since 2000 "Hey God" has only been played a total of 8 times (4 on LH tour). Furthermore since 2000, the band have been on 5 different "world tours" and only played the song 8 times amounting to a lousy average of 1.6 times a tour. I'd say that make s it pretty rare now... |
In terms of the classification of 'rare', as in the other thread, I just took it to mean songs which hadn't been played much in a few years. To me the word rare means something along the lines of "once in a while" but the songs that you listed would be more a case of "hardly ever". If a song is played at <10% of shows on a given tour then I'd call it rare. A song which was played a lot on a tour but then hardly at all on the next tour might be classed as rare.

1. We're An American Band 3. Homebound Train ??? 7. Lie To Me quote] I agree that it's great to see "tour rarities" and in general alot more variety on any tour, I guess I see "rare" as "damn near never" :) 1,3, and 7 have all exceeded 10 live performances :) Dave |
I think that what you class as rare might be better labelled as scarce - there are those songs which get played literally a couple of times, and some never at all, but I still think that any song played just a few times on a given tour is a rarity.
The songs that I heard at the 3 shows I attended last year, which I'd class as rare - I'd Die For You - Played 8 times in 2008, though it was played 25 times on the last tour. Generally a rarity in the US I think, and played more over here in Europe. Dry County - This was, of course, brought back on the last tour after a 10 year absence, and played 6 times then and 5 times in 2008. I'd think anyone would class that a rarity - and probably one of the most welcomed ones. Diamond Ring - Played just once on the last tour and 4 times in 2008, this is another which has been out of regular rotation since 1996. Technically this is more rare than Dery County then. Last Cigarette - Played more widely on the last tour, due to it being from that album of course, but then just the once in 2008, so for this tour it was a rarity. I Believe - Played a few times on the Crush and Bounce tours, then a 5 year absence until 2008, played just the once. I'd consider this a rarity - and for myself, and judging everyone else, a very welcomed one. I actually saw a banned at Twickenham (night 1) which said "Have some balls; play 'I Believe'" and then they did it (night 2) so maybe that's how we get requests - challenge them aggressively :p |
