casual fan as well. Saw them live in December 2008. They were okay, but it seemed so structured, and they played 2 nights in a row in Calgary, and I saw them both (2nd night I got tickets for free!) The only difference was that they added one extra song to the second night. (All Nightmare Long - apparently it was the first time it was played live, ever) Although they might have changed little bits but I never really noticed. First night was great, second was a repeat. It seemed more like a play type thing where they had loads of lasers and pyro and everything was on time with the music, but the energy wasn't. I mean, they played there part in the 'play', but it just looked so rehearsed. Nothing really spontatneous. They also didn't play Battery.... both nights.

So my cousin bought tickets, but something came up last minute, so guess who has fallen into some GREAT seats for an amazing price?!

I'm just a casual listener. I don't like their 80s stuff much, but the 90s are pretty good. The Black Album is a killer for sure. And I enjoy the sound of Load & ReLoad a lot, and there are some pretty fine songs on both of them. I also enjoy the first "Garage Inc." CD a lot (haven't listened to the 2nd in ages). "S&M" is grand. Found out lately that St. Anger isn't as bad as I always thought it is, but it probably still is though - I failed to listen to it again after my enlightenment (and still, I could not stand more than 2 or 3 songs in a row...

I remember when "The Memory Remains" was really big on MTV, and I went and bought the single. :-)

I was a casual listener, now im a fan.

Saw them at Download 2006 and they atrocious, really really bad.

Saw them again at Sonisphere in August and they blew me away, everything was just better (apart from Lars, obviously, the shoddiest drummer around).

I've since gone and bought their back catalogue. The 80's albums, whilst undoubtably containing the strongest material, have really not aged well. Almost to the point where i find them unlistenable. For instance, if i want to listen to songs from the early albums i find myself digging them out of live albums and bootlegs instead of on the original cd solely because of the dated sound.

The Load/Reload albums are bloody awful. Maybe if they were condensed onto one album (i know that they were released at different times, but still...) then they MIGHT not sound that bad. It's Metallica playing cheesey drive-time dad-rock. Booooooooooooring. Not just boring but so much of it is actual shite too (eg. Bleeding Me/Ronnie/Low Man's Lyric etc etc etc blah blah blah...). Obviously there are the odd standout (eg Fuel) but overall they are still the worst albums of Metallica's career (in my opinion!).

St Anger is by far my favourite album. Maybe it's different for me because i wasnt neccesarily a fan of the stuff that came beforehand, but i just ****ing love this album. Yeah the drums sound like shit (like every Metallica CD!) but it really is top! At times it comes across as more of a hardcore punk/metal album which is right up my street.
And i was all for the 'no solo!' approach taken on the record, Hammett is one of the most overrated guitarists in rock.

And i was reasonably pleased with Death Magnetic.

I own all their albums, but I don't find myself digging them out regularly. Maybe because they're just so overplayed everywhere else I go. I agree, Metallica is one of the best produced albums ever. I'd love it if more albums were produced like this. Load/Reload have some great songs between them, but too many fillers aswell, which brings the overall grade down a bit. Didn't appreciate St. Anger at first, but over the years (especially leading up to Death Magnetic) I've grown to appreciate it more. Frantic and the title track are beasts of songs. Death Magnetic however, I still can't really get into. I realise that the hardcore old-skool 'tallica fans have been waiting for them to release and album like this for a long time, which is fair enough, but I find most of the songs average to incredibly weak! And this is a trash album I'm talking about. Production is horrible and due to the little dynamic range (the so-called "loudness war") the sound suffers. Though that's not the main reason I'm not fussed on it. All my mates on the other hand went nuts for it though.
