The MetallicA Thread

So are there some fans of the biggest heavy metal band in the world in here? :p
Let's talk!!

jbjrsdc 06-17-2009 09:19 PM

I love Metallica. Glad they got on back track with the very enjoyable Death Magnetic. Unlike the old school fan, though I do enjoy early Metallica; Black, Load & Re-load are my fav albums.

My only issues with Metallica are they take too long between records; and ST. Anger pretty much blows.

Supersonic 06-17-2009 09:24 PM

Aloha !

I can still enjoy them every now and then though but they are way past their prime. Apart from Trujillo they've all become very average musicians and are not the tight unit anymore they used to be. Lars is incapable of playing consisted (which is important for a drummer, eh?), Hetfield is losing his voice a bit and Hammet is getting more sloppier every tour. They get a lot of love for sticking around and getting back to form but anyone who really listens to their latest shows must realize that this is not the case.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

First, yeah I like the Loads too very much. Maybe because we're here all not that closed minded "I am a metalhead and I just listen to true metal" kind of people
:-P They are sooo good! Bluesy but still a heavy feel to it. Songs like Bleeding Me and Outlaw Torn are simply masterpieces.
My favourite one from the thrash decade is Justice. It is not that overproduced but still better than St.Anger's raw mix.
DM is not that bad, i just hate the sound of it. I would like to hear such a huge production like on The Black Album. This is the best metal production that's out there for a loooong while now

jbjrsdc 06-17-2009 09:40 PM

yea, the black album sounds amazing, love the drum sound.

Jeeper 06-18-2009 03:59 AM

I love Metallica. Their music got me into the likes of Megadeth, Machine Head, Pantera, Sepultura etc. For me, Master Of Puppets is the best Metal album ever made.

I've got all their stuff, and pretty much enjoy most of it. St.Anger was a let down, as was Reload. They really should have kept Load and Reload as one album. Death Magnetic is a return to form, although not nearly as good as anything from Kill 'Em All up to the Black album. (Broken Beat & Scarred is immense though)

I agree with Seb about their live performances. I've never rated Lars as a top drummer, and Kirk is soooooooo infuriating. He's got talent, but never seems to push himself. I've seen awesome solo's followed by sloppy ones, during the same gig! He's consistently inconsistant. Marty Friedman is streets ahead of him. That said, they still kick it live, just not as much as back in the day. I think they were at their tightest during the Damaged Justice tour. They really meant business in those days. Songs like Battery and Harvester Of Sorrow just f*ckin growled at you.

I know Kirk has come up with some great riffs, notably Enter Sandman, but i sometimes wonder what masterpieces would have been conceived if Dave Mustaine had remained. Megadeth are so underrated. Him and Hetfield are true riff masters! ;)

Here's a cool vid from the Live Shit: Binge & Purge Seattle concert.

I like Metallica, and they're one of 2 bands left that I HAVE to see that I haven't (Rage is the other one)

I actually like more of the album tracks like King Nothing or Bleeding Me than I do the more recognisable tunes like Enter Sandman or One. Bleeding Me's my favourite track. The version of that on the S&M album (which is one of my all time favourite albums) just blows me away.

Cyanide's my favourite track from Death Magnetic, and I like the album, but have only really listened to it all the way through once or twice.

I'd say I'm a casual Metallica listener rather than a huge fan.

RockThunder 06-18-2009 10:50 PM

S&M is brilliant! It turned out really well. I think they were one of the first to crossover with classical music before lots of other bands copied that.
Live they are tighter than some years some ago for sure! The setlists are more interesting and versatile than it was on their "comeback" with St.Anger.
But like you said the sloppines annoys me. It seems like Ulrich and Hammett don't need to practice because they are big in business and no one cares ;-) Especially the drums. There are far more cool double bass parts on the original recordings as he plays them live. Another point is that Hetfield's voice is worn out. But that can happen...

Jeeper 06-20-2009 01:28 PM

The Outlaw Torn is the best song on Load. Brilliant.

I agree that Hetfield's voice is a bit shaky these days. He often does Jon's trick of letting the crowd sing the harder notes, which is fine but at least Jovi's songs have key changes to warrant some of that lol. I'm not knocking Hetfield though. I still think he's a great frontman. And hearing Dave Mustaine murder Reckoning Day live, makes me realise that quite a few singers of 20 plus years do struggle to hit certain notes consistently after so many gigs/tours.

I wonder if Hetfield has forgiven Jon and co for the Monsters Of Rock events? I remember a while ago reading Hetfield answer a question about who he would least like to share a lift with, and saying "Jon Bon Jovi, because he still irritates me after all these years!"

RockThunder 06-20-2009 06:00 PM

He is still a great frontman for sure! Amazing how you can play such complex rhytm stuff and sing at once.
well, at least this poser bash between metal and hair rock is over nowadays. There aren't this borders anymore, I think it is childish because both had amazing skills.
Outlaw Torn is mind blowning yeah! The last track and it is nearly the best on the whole record.
I am looking forward what is going to come on the next album. I hope an evolution in the direction of DM. I have a feeling they get back to form after all those years...
"Rise, fall down, rise again" like some special lyrics say :-)

Not their biggest fan, just a casual one.

Panda 06-21-2009 02:52 AM

casual fan as well. Saw them live in December 2008. They were okay, but it seemed so structured, and they played 2 nights in a row in Calgary, and I saw them both (2nd night I got tickets for free!) The only difference was that they added one extra song to the second night. (All Nightmare Long - apparently it was the first time it was played live, ever) Although they might have changed little bits but I never really noticed. First night was great, second was a repeat. It seemed more like a play type thing where they had loads of lasers and pyro and everything was on time with the music, but the energy wasn't. I mean, they played there part in the 'play', but it just looked so rehearsed. Nothing really spontatneous. They also didn't play Battery.... both nights.

Kheprahotep 11-05-2009 08:13 PM

So my cousin bought tickets, but something came up last minute, so guess who has fallen into some GREAT seats for an amazing price?!

Oooooh yeah :D

Could you elaborate that incident please?

I'm just a casual listener. I don't like their 80s stuff much, but the 90s are pretty good. The Black Album is a killer for sure. And I enjoy the sound of Load & ReLoad a lot, and there are some pretty fine songs on both of them. I also enjoy the first "Garage Inc." CD a lot (haven't listened to the 2nd in ages). "S&M" is grand. Found out lately that St. Anger isn't as bad as I always thought it is, but it probably still is though - I failed to listen to it again after my enlightenment (and still, I could not stand more than 2 or 3 songs in a row...

I remember when "The Memory Remains" was really big on MTV, and I went and bought the single. :-)

RockThunder 11-07-2009 04:39 PM

...And Justice For All is where the art has to be found. Not weak (Re)Load songs

JerseyboyUK 11-08-2009 05:40 AM

I was a casual listener, now im a fan.

Saw them at Download 2006 and they atrocious, really really bad.

Saw them again at Sonisphere in August and they blew me away, everything was just better (apart from Lars, obviously, the shoddiest drummer around).

I've since gone and bought their back catalogue. The 80's albums, whilst undoubtably containing the strongest material, have really not aged well. Almost to the point where i find them unlistenable. For instance, if i want to listen to songs from the early albums i find myself digging them out of live albums and bootlegs instead of on the original cd solely because of the dated sound.

The Load/Reload albums are bloody awful. Maybe if they were condensed onto one album (i know that they were released at different times, but still...) then they MIGHT not sound that bad. It's Metallica playing cheesey drive-time dad-rock. Booooooooooooring. Not just boring but so much of it is actual shite too (eg. Bleeding Me/Ronnie/Low Man's Lyric etc etc etc blah blah blah...). Obviously there are the odd standout (eg Fuel) but overall they are still the worst albums of Metallica's career (in my opinion!).

St Anger is by far my favourite album. Maybe it's different for me because i wasnt neccesarily a fan of the stuff that came beforehand, but i just ****ing love this album. Yeah the drums sound like shit (like every Metallica CD!) but it really is top! At times it comes across as more of a hardcore punk/metal album which is right up my street.
And i was all for the 'no solo!' approach taken on the record, Hammett is one of the most overrated guitarists in rock.

And i was reasonably pleased with Death Magnetic.

Dave 1986 11-09-2009 03:05 AM

I own all their albums, but I don't find myself digging them out regularly. Maybe because they're just so overplayed everywhere else I go. I agree, Metallica is one of the best produced albums ever. I'd love it if more albums were produced like this. Load/Reload have some great songs between them, but too many fillers aswell, which brings the overall grade down a bit. Didn't appreciate St. Anger at first, but over the years (especially leading up to Death Magnetic) I've grown to appreciate it more. Frantic and the title track are beasts of songs. Death Magnetic however, I still can't really get into. I realise that the hardcore old-skool 'tallica fans have been waiting for them to release and album like this for a long time, which is fair enough, but I find most of the songs average to incredibly weak! And this is a trash album I'm talking about. Production is horrible and due to the little dynamic range (the so-called "loudness war") the sound suffers. Though that's not the main reason I'm not fussed on it. All my mates on the other hand went nuts for it though.

Kheprahotep 11-11-2009 01:41 AM

HOLY DUDE THAT WAS AN AMAZING SHOW!!!!

I should have started catching them on tour a long time ago! :)
*bouncebounce*

Didn't care much for Lamb of God though, but then I've never been into screamer bands :p

yomamasofat 11-11-2009 09:08 AM

I love the first five albums especially RTL, MOP and S/T.
St Anger is worse than TLFR. Death Magnetic is ok, but not that memorable.

WILDJOVIMAN 11-12-2009 11:50 AM

TLFR is great.

Javier 11-12-2009 05:18 PM

Death Magnetic I see it as a step in the right direction, but IMO it just doesn't have that much replay value that the pre-load albums had. I also go from love to liking the (re)load albums but to me there never gonna make a song like Fade to Black ever again. That's the shining light of Metallica's career. Just my opinion of course :D
