Jovi or U2 (who is bigger or better?)

Might have been discussed before I dont know but I would like to know what peoples views are on this. I know U2 are labelled as the biggest band in the world over the last lot of years. who agrees and who thinks they are the best or maybe even overrated.

i know they are very different and difficult to compare at the same time so the (whos better thing) is probably a bit irrelevant

anyway my brother in law is a big u2 fan and thinks jovi are shit thats why i made this thread.

thanks to any replies

I'd say U2 are bigger based on sales, awards and reputation/"coolness". Way overrated by critics though.

In terms of actual sales and money generates I'm pretty sure U2 are the bigger band. As for who is better-well in my opinion it is unquestionably Jovi.

I think Bono has the best voice in rock but U2 are lacking any quality control whatsoever! They have some absolutely amazing songs (and albums even) but a lot of what they release is average at best. Jovi are consistently good, and usually great (blah blah blah post-2000 etc).

I heard a story about U2 from the All That You Can't Leave Behind sessions from the producer. Story goes that he spends 3 weeks in the recording studio with U2, 17 hours days with multi-track recording going on literally all the time. The studio is didivded into four sections and each band member has their own indiivdual section where they working on whatever they want, Edge is Edging, Bono is making up lyrics over yesterdays tapes etc.

This goes of for 3 weeks with no results whatsoever. Next day the producer walks in and the Edge has just stumbled upon a riff he likes and is playing it for the rest of the band. In the 10 minutes or so the producer has taken to get his coat off, made a cup of tea, settled into work etc U2 basically have a song written and ready to go.....

....that song was Beautiful Day. There is a point here-basically they technique is so hit and miss and I think they're albums reflect that.

I would say U2 is the bigger band. As far as better, it's subjective (and I like both), however as Nige said, I think U2 has released a lot more filler over their career then Jovi has.

Bono sounds like shit now though, they did a tribute to MJ during Angels Of Harlem yesterday, he sand a few lines from man in the mirror an don't stop till you get enough and it was awful (however an incedibly nice sentimet!)

whereas jon can still sing!

I definitely think that U2 is the bigger band, and I also think they and Bono are extremely overrated. Personally I think that their music is just OK. And obviously I think Bon Jovi are miles better.

U who?

Just kiddin! They've written plenty of AMAZING songs over the years. Still I don't think a band has ever been as overrated as they are. Not to mention that they are anything but my cup of tea. Why? - this sums it up pretty neatly!

The general music buying public see U2 as cool and Bon Jovi uncool, simple as that.

U2 never had poodle perms and dressed like Transvestites, U2 never wrote songs about laying hands on people or bad medicine. They wrote about things that matter and every album was different while still maintaining quality.

U2 live are always an ever changing interactive band also, Bon Jovi just seem happy to pick up the money and run these days.

Probably the best live performance I've seen on Youtube

I love both bands and I'm going to see U2 this year ;P

Personally I think that Jon is far better than Bono and Richie is far better than Edge. Tico is also better than Mullen Jr. only Clayton is better than Such/McDonald.
U2 is I think only one band which can record bad/poor/sh*t album and they will win 3 or 5 Grammy for that. Critics love them. Even last sh**t album have GREAT opinions. Jovi always were critics opossite them (after 2000 this changed a little bit) and even great albums like KTF, TD or HAND haven't had good reviews.

Songs - I think both bands have the same amount of great songs but I have some U2 songs which I can't listen and every song from Bon Jovi I can listen (even PBBICowboy which for me is one of their worst song).

Lyrics: Both bands are great.

People: U2 is more popular than Bon Jovi. U2 sold more cd than bj. U2 have more awards ecc. In my opinion they don't deserve for that popularity. They are good but they are not best.

And last. When I hear in TV that U2 will come to us (poland) and how they are GREAT and blah blah blah.... it makes me that I want to sold my ticket but when I turn they live shows on youtube I want to see them right now (and then I'm happy that I have that ticket). I love U2 music and I don't love this U2 which is showing on TV.

I call bullshit, since U2's sets are way more static then even Bon Jovi's.
