Typical

What actually is a “typical Bon Jovi song?

What I’m saying is that songs like people see Born To Be My Baby, Livin’ On A Prayer, Lay Your Hands On Me as typical Bon Jovi songs. It’s the songs that were made in the genre that gave them their break through and why everyone got to know them.
But appearantly the typical Bon Jovi song thing has moved to something of which I don’t know what people are trying to say with it.

I mean, I really don’t understand what people mean with a typical Bon Jovi song nowdays.
Is it the trend of teeny pop like what’s on Have A Nice Day, the heavy, almost grungy sound like that’s on some songs of Bounce or the country influenced style that showed up on Lost Highway?
What I do know is that I don’t feel a Bon Jovi song anymore. It’s got not that typical rock feel feeling like what was on Slippery, New Jersey and Keep The Faith that made me feel that it is a typical Bon Jovi song. Some songs that attempt to rock don’t even come close. But those are the albums of which I feel that those are the typical Bon Jovi songs.

So what is it? Can you explain?

:o They are not my favourites :p Far from it.

I just said them 3 because every lead single is similar to them.

I know mate. I was just kidding. You make a good point, as Bon Jovi seems to think that everything needs to sound like It's My Life or something like that in order to make a typical Bon Jovi song, whereas the casual listener will always think that a typical Bon Jovi really is one of the older classics. Not because those were the hits, but because they got that typical sound. It's My Life had it as well, but in a lesser form than what we were used to get.

I really think that with this song people will say "yeah, sounds nice, but it's not as good as the older stuff".

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Anything with a big chorus, a positive optimistic lyric that is catchy and loudly sung is typical bon jovi. It usually has some hints of heavy guitars and sounds always pretty bombastic in the choruses. Some examples:

We Weren't Born To Follow, You give love a bad name, It's my life, Livin on a prayer, Bounce, Everyday, HAND, Lost Highway, Born to be my baby, Blaze of Glory, I'll sleep when i'm dead, ...

I've already has someone say that to me haha.

I wish they would forget about songs like IML, HAND etc.. and go back to songs like Hey God, strong, powerful rock songs with good vocals and good guitar solos. Just can't see it.

You've got a different rip because my version of We Weren't Born To Follow doesn't have a bombastic chorus. Neither does Lost Highway, apart from the "Hey hey's" that were put in there just to make it sound bombastic.

I could agree with that. Wouldn't know what bombastic means though

You can't put some of those songs in that same bracket!

Prayer
Bad Name
Bad Medicine
Born To Be My Baby
Blood On Blood
Blaze Of Glory
Keep The Faith
Sleep
Saturday Night
These Days
It's My Life
One Wild Night
Undivided

These are all songs that are typical BJ. Just great songs in their own right, whether it's the lyrics the structure or whatever.

We Weren't Born To Follow
Lost Highway
Everyday
Have A Nice Day

These are ok songs but nothing like the other stuff listed, I know there sre lots of other examples too.

Bon Jovi just seem to be very lazy in releasing new material now, sticking with the same producer, revisiting the same formula time and time again. I hope I am proved wrong by the new album.
