Lost Highway Appreciation
With all the well deserved praise The Circle is getting (which I share) I think its fair to reflect on a previous 00's album I feel is a bit underrated. I'm not saying its a fantastic album or anything, but I started feeling the vibes in several threads that many now felt it was a POS, it became something of the redheaded stepchild of the Bon Jovi years.
Bon Jovi doing country isn't a good idea, but I dont think the country influence is that great on it. The reason I like LH is because it contains some of my favourite Bon Jovi songs of recent years. Make a Memory is a fantastic song. A lot different from the usual power ballads we normally get. Same goes for Lonely which reminded straight away of These Days. Whole Lot of Leavin' devides a lot of people. Personally I love it. Any Other Day is also a fantastic song which I can't sing the praises of high enough. I think it actually laid down the foundations of the sound BJ went on to do in The Circle. I still feel Walk Like a Man is a better song then the Circle's Live Before You Die which shares the same theme. So while overrall it's not a classic by any means - it contains far too much dross, the first two tracks and almost the entire second half of the album if you dont include the bonus tracks we got - it still has such great stand alone songs to warrant more respect then I think it's getting around here. |
I do actually notice there's a lost highway-like guitar lick in Learn To Love.
The best tracks on LH, Any Other Day and Whole Lot Of Leaving just didn't come across well live. The album barely gets a listen these days. It's not a bad record, and I did like it when it was first released, but in comparison to The Circle it's a dead duck. |
I think some of the ballads on there are the best they've written in the last 10 years. TYFLM was incredibly cheesy and All about lovin you was just awful. At least the likes of MAM and Strangers show they can write a good slow intimate track. However, after listening to learn to love off the circle I'm finding lost highway ballads defunct.

If you compare it to The Circle then It doesn't stand a chance......
But I feel like the first half of the album contains some great songs, LH is a great song that got far to much hate, and yes the bridge is amazing, MAM s soo haunting and beautifull, Summertime and WGIGO are just made for fun, Any other day and WLOLeavin are the brightest spots in the album IMO.... The secong half of the album is mostly a give or take for me, it's not to say they;re bad song per se but apart from Everybody's broken and Last Night none of it is really my cup of tea. I think the only time I'm actually heard One Step Closer in full was once on the record when I first got it and once on the LH dvd..... |
I'll always have a soft spot for Lost Highway because I saw my first Jovi show on the LH tour. Plus I really love about half the album, and the only tracks I actually dislike are We Got It Going On and I Love This Town. But it's pretty samey and I don't think I've listened to it straight through at all in the past year.

I dont mind Lost Highway at all. The Circle is indeed a lot better but there a quite a few tracks I enjoy from Lost Highway (many which people hate).
I REALLY love Whole Lot of Leavin. Its up with with my favourite Jovi songs ever. I also like Any Other Day, Lonely, Walk Like A Man, Strangers, We Got It Goin On (even if it is just a throw-away party song), Memory, The Last Night and Put the Boy Back In Cowboy. Lost Highway, Seat Next To You, I Love This Town and Sumemertime got old really quickly. I did like them once upon a time but now I barely listen to them. Everybody's Broken I never listen to and One Step Closer is one of my least favourite Jovi tracks ever. So it has its ups and downs but overall I dont mind it. Would I ever want a Lost Highway 2? Never. Do I enjoy Lost Highway? Yes. |
This album has grown on me recently, I've been listening to it alot. Wasn't to keen on it when it first came out. Has some bad songs that I skip but also has some good, they out weigh the bad.

I've loved LH from day one. Sure, it could of been better but their were some really good songs and decent solos from Richie.
|
IMO it belongs to their worst.... Make A Memory was till the Circle their best post 2000 ballad, Any other day is a good song but only cause the others are so crap.
Whole lot of leavin' doesn't do anything for the either... |
Only studio album by the band I don't own. Well, that and TLFR.
