Jon certainly had to take steroids. He's confirmed it.
I think they have all done drugs in the 80's, but I'm pretty sure Jon stopped because he didn't like it. The rest would have stopped, too, I presume. |
Jon used to deal drugs when he was a teenager:

There was fairly recent backstage tour footage (possibly from HAND) where there were very strong hints that the band did indulge in it in the 80s. It was mentioned as they passed a booth just behind the stage but I can't remember what it was called or who inferred the drug use. Someone here may have more info or a link to the actual backstage footage.

I recommend you to buy Star Man by Michael Francis :) There you can read alot about the drugs in the 80's and alot more.

I think JBJ would have been the lightest user of the whole band. I'd say Alec was the heaviest user because he always looked out of it. It's hard to know with the rest of the band, they always held it together live anyway.
If you watch Slash and Duff at the height of G 'N' R's power you'll see two men losing it nearly every night. As I said I think they were all on it around 87, this video of Raise your hands goes someway to proving that. Tico is playing way too fast for no reason and the other members look extremely pumped. |

Also from the same show, Jon talks absolute babble for three minutes straight. He looks and sounds out of his skull.

Is it such a big deal?
It's just that the new clean band image is broken for some people now :-) The 80s had some of the best rock music and lots of drugs - fact. Rich got rid of the hard stuff and didn't waste his life like numeurous other guys (just look what happened to Ratt's Robbin Crosby), it's ok. |
