Jon missing the point

Jon needs to write a song like Hallelujah instead of releasing this shite that is really just air that receives no attention. If he could write a song like Hallelujah the man would be seen as a god.

Im not saying that he has not written songs like it or as good, e.g Dry County and Santa Fe, though he is at an age where his voice can no longer handle the old stuff when performed live, evident in the msg dvd, and these songs, especially the ones that are about love dont suit him anymore, because he is too old to properly relate to or understand a love song.

Hallelujah and the likes is where he is at now.

Reckon he could do it or even knows it himself? I bet he does!

Erm, you're missing the point. Ever since Jon discovered the piano ballad as in Levon from Elton John, Piano Man from Billy Joel and now this rendition of Hallelujah he's been trying to write a song just like that. Why else do you think we've had a Joey, a Wildflower and a Learn To Love? So no, he can't do it himself.

And even though Jon struggles with the old songs, he struggles with the new ones as well. The chorus of Have A Nice Day sounds just as bad as Keep The Faith does, and his vocals are badly mixed on the MSG DVD as well. He sounds better on the audience recordings of the same nights compared to the final mix on MSG.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

Yeah the problem Jon has got with trying to write a song like that is that it would just turn out way too cheesy. He's better looking for something more serious to write about a bit like he did in '97 with DA. That was a great album, but I'm not sure Jon has that in him anymore though. He seems too happy and content in what he's doing at the moment, which pretty much brings me back to your original point. I guess when he has had something serious to write about then it has brought us some of the better songs of the last 10 years such as Novacaine and Undivided. Although having said that WFTWM was supposed to be like that and it has just turned out way too chessy and it sounds false. It's obvious Jon isn't really on the unemployment line.

The best thing for the band now is to pursue some solo projects, maybe after a GH and a couple of tours. The band's agenda has always been to appeal to the mainstream, and they seem too wrapped up in that and are missing the big picture. In my opinion it seems that with every album it's becoming more clear that they aren't really in it for the music anymore. Sad, but true. :(

This is so true. Wonder why it is.... I had been assuming it was a case of the amateur equipment flattering his voice rather than bad mixing on the DVD...
