Miss Fourth Of July
This is probably one of my favourite songs by the band, I'm thinking now as I listen to it. Certainly one of their best ballads. The harmonies are great (though obviously Jon and Richie have nothing on Seb and I :p ) and I love the accordion on it. Great solo too.
Should've made Keep The Faith (if it was indeed recorded for that album)! Who needs I Want You (although everyone should check out the Bob Dylan song of the same name, incidentally), this would have been a great addition to the album. Sadly lost something live on the LH Tour because of Poncho's ****ing violin solo. Top tune. Discuss. |
Funny you bring it up, I was just listening to it earlier. One of my favorite tracks on the Box Set. I agree about the beautiful harmonies, and I love melancholy nature of the song.

A true gem it is,who knows they might fit it in during the circle tour esp around the something for the pain section with the lads and dave on accordian
|
Yeah it's a good song. Am I right in thinking it was a KTF outtake? They wrote so many awesome songs for that album. Any outtake from back then totally wipes the floor with the post 2000 stuff.
|
Y'know, I've never been able to get into this song.
I would say it's damn right boring, but I love Maybe Someday so who knows what' up... |
Brilliant song, absolutely should have been on Keep The Faith. It could have replaced any of the songs on the latter half of the album. Unbelievable it wasnīt used back then. For me, itīs better than Bed Of Roses.

I haven't listened to it in a while. |
Completely agree this a great song that should have made the record. Would be an excellent choice for the acoustic set out on "the circle." Check out the version live from Atlantic City (2004). Incredible harmonies.
|
Love it, love it, love it!!
Having that "break" was the best thing for the band at the time (KTF). It really brought them back with some wonderful material. |
I love this song as well - i know it obviously wasn't written for Bounce but i feel as if it would fit perfectly on that album = maybe in the place of "Joey" - je ne sais pas
|
It's a pretty good song, but it's never been one of my favourites off the boxset. I like the verses (especially the "for the night I just watched as you walked out of here" line) and the bridges, but the chorus just lacks something IMO. The accordion is an interesting touch though.

I was just watching the performance on the HAND dual disc. I love the song so much, the lyrics really hold a special place in my heart, sappy I know but I'm really passionate about this song. I'll defend it till the day I die and I've covered it twice live.
|
In all humble honesty, I never understood why people (and the band itself) praise that song so much. It's just dragging and boring, and therefore annoying. I like the lyrical idea, but that's about it. Actually one of my least favourites from the Boxset... and by no means something that should've replaced anything on KTF.
|
Great song, I love pretty much that whole first disc on the box set though.
|
I absolutely love Miss Fourth, and I've been lucky enough to hear it live twice now. IMO, it isn't a typical Jovi song, and I really can't see it fitting on KTF. (It's always had more of a TD feel to me, although I know that wasn't when it was written.) I was thrilled to hear it on Saturday night and thought Jon & Richie's vocals were stunning. I can't stop listening to it, and I get chills every time I do. This is just the kind of bone that I think they can throw to the diehards on a nightly basis. They did it both nights at Mohegan Sun (NSG on Friday), and because of that, I forgive them for doing Capt. Crash at both shows. ;)

Terri - did you ever listen to Jon's speech at the Borgata box set show about the "grey summer". There were a bunch of songs written then and this was one of them. We've had several discussions about this here and obviously can't pinpoint if it's the summer of 91 or the summer of 92 but we did come up with what we thought were the songs written during that time.

It IS odd that most of us die hards really like these songs. As we all know, most casual fans like the hairband hits and not much else. I had a conversation with a guy who is plenty old enough to know better (and a Bruce fan) and he says that Jon plays too much new stuff on this tour  go figure.
I agree with Jack - an album like that would have been awesome. However enough songs made it on to the box set that we have a good representation (I think). However many people here think that These Days is dark and depressing. I don't imagine a grey summer album would appeal to them either. |
I always thought songs like "Taking it Back", "Starting All Over Again", and "Why Aren't You Dead" were Post-Grey Summer?
And for what it's worth, Darkness still has "Badlands" and "The Promised Land" which are somewhat optimistic songs. |
What the hell is all this grey summer talk? Did I miss something?

Luckily it wasn't, because that album's at a perfect length and another Thunder Road/Born To Run on that album would have been overkill. |

I really like it to :D

Gee am i the only one who hates this song? I'll give it another listen now to see if I missed something.
|
Keeps on dragging and dragging. You are not alone Savvi though I don't hate it but it ain't my favorite either.
I salute you, TS |

Amen to that

I might be wrong in believing this, but I always considered Dry County a grey summer song, too.

"I had a crisis of some description," he (Jon) says. "It was to do with the music business. There's a reason why it's called a 'business'. I questioned it. "We were driving along the Pacific Coast Highway one time and I was in the passenger seat thinking I was just going to throw myself out of the car. "I went to see a shrink but was late for my appointment and so he told me my time was up and I thought to myself: 'Well, I'll just have to get over this in my own time.' I call that period my 'Grey Summer'. It lasted about two years. http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/showbi...ks-my-world.do |
