I'm pretty sure you do. I need a passport to enter the US whether I'm flying or driving. I will double check for you though.

That's one of the things that has changed in the years since 9/11. Back then, you didn't need a passport. I had just re-entered the U.S. a few days before 9/11 after going to dog shows in Canada. In those days, I had to have more paperwork to get the dogs back and forth across the border than I needed for myself. My drivers license and a voter registration card was sufficient for me.

Since I don't drive I looked at Greyhound and Amtrack for Toronto and the trip according to both sites is at least a 12 hrs.
