Thief Of Hearts

Anyone else keen on this? I really really like it, more recently than before however.

It is simple, but lyrically very strong. Low points are difficult to spot, in order to see how it ended up being a b-side/outtake, but maybe where Jon goes very low, seen more clearly when he struggles slightly when singing it live in November 2004. There are little moments of weakness admittedly, but overall I think it is a good song. Nice melodies and a little different for Jovi.

Would really like to hear it live, although I am aware that is almost certainly never going to happen

This is one I could pass on. Lyrically it's ok but that's about it. It's got no punch to it.

And LMS too. I never got the hype over that one. I think the HAND version is ok. I actually do like the Live version on the Wal-Mart exclusive CD though.

i like the melody, surely a punch is not always necessary?

now talking about punchy. i adore adore adore last man standing, what a smasher!

You're right, punch is the wrong word. But I just don't feel it.

I remember MSG '05 or '06 when Jon came out center stage to LMS. I wasn't expecting it at all. All of a sudden the house lights go out, I hear girls screaming uncontrollably 1 row over, I see some sort of commotion going on, then I see a bunch of bodyguards…….. I was like WTF (I though a fight broke out or something). Then the music started, the spot light hit, and there was Jon practically standing directly in front of me. It all happened 1,2,3…… Then on his way to the stage, I got a high five…. Very cool moment.

The lyrics don't start right away on the live version. The music loops a few times so every time I hear it, I have that image in my head.

I heard Thief of Hearts once at the Borgata show. I really like it - no it has no punch but it's a very catchy melody that appeals to me.

I was at night 2 of the TLFR shows in 2003 and also at the boxset show in 2004. The Borgata is a small place for this band and a very nice place to watch a show. I was very pleased that there were televised events from both shows so I could have a copy :)

I really like it.

I think it has a VERY obvious Tom Petty influence to it.

I like this one. In fact I like it much better than Last Man Standing... at least the This Left version. Had it been on This Left, it would have been one of the highlight.

It is very Tom Petty. In fact, the "hey baby" is very much like I won't back down. Maybe that is why I like it so much. If they had modeled more of Lost Highway or The Circle after old Tom Petty Songs, I'd probably like them a little bit more. Two story Town also reminds me of Tom Petty.... probably the similiar title to his One Story Town.... But anyway, yes, I like Thief of Hearts. It is not their best, but certainly not their worst.

I really like the song. I was at both Borgata shows and really loved hearing it. Night 1 was better than Night 2 IMO. Of course, I was very, very sick night 2. I was looking at my watch and wondering "how much longer?"

I have to against the tide here.

There's few Bon Jovi songs I actually hate, but this is one of them.

I gave it a listen the other night when I was putting the boxset onto my new laptop, just to see if maybe my opinion would change but nah, it didn't...

Possibly the biggest lot of tosh ever.

Always liked it. Strong melody. Shame they took it off TLFR, which could have used a little upbeat song near the end, where it has too many slow songs in a row. I would say it's a neat song, it's not 'great' by any means, but not bad either. Just a funny little thing with a strong Tom Petty reference. The only thing I don't really like are the boring drums. That must be Tico's low: Just keeping a straight rhythm. He hits the cymbals like 3 times in the whole song and that's it.

Together with LMS it would've made TLFR much more interesting. I never understood why they took both songs off in the last minute... they could've still put the rock version on HAND, but I guess they started feeling LMS would be a key track on the HAND record and therefore shouldn't get spoiled before. Who knows.

I like it too. I think it was actually my favourite song for a while (not sure if that says something about my latent personality :p ).

severo17 05-12-2011 04:12 PM

I just... hate it... the lyrics, Jon's voice, the melody... Urgh....

sammy645 05-12-2011 04:30 PM

Jon's voice is really bad in this song IMO. I like the beat, and the lyrics arent the worst...but god the voice blows

Petty fan?
Anyway, TOH is another in the long list of Petty style Jovi tracks.

I am indeed! What other songs would you classify as Petty style Jovi tracks?

There are quite a few on the box set... I think I mentioned 2 Story town above. Last Man standing for sure. Next 100 Years maybe even Just Older. Probably part of the reason I like Crush so much.

Oh and Bounce! Kidding.

Way back when, I actually had a whole thread about this...lol
Thief of Hearts, Rich Man Living In A Poor Man's House, I Got The Girl, Mystery Train as far as band songs. Also, Queen of New Orleans is basically Jon rewriting Mary Jane's Last Dance.

Mystery Train is only one of my favorites... I don't know why I didn' think of that one. The verses and then the "Mystery Trauuuin" is very Petty.

Yeah the rythem to the lyrics of QONO is very much like MJLD though I had never thought of it until now. When that song came out all I could think about was if Jon had enough time from the release of Foo Fighter's the Colour and Shape album to rip off "Hey Johney park." I remember those guitar riffs being very similar.

Speaking of, for being as an original album as DA was (and ahead of it's time IMO), it certainly "borrowed" a bit. August 7, 415 vs Free World.
