New single, High Hopes, to be released on november 25 :D

Panda 11-19-2013 10:31 PM

I have high hopes for it.

Thunderstrucker 11-25-2013 11:27 PM

Pre-ordered the limited edition on amazon.com today. The bonusdvd contains the entire BITUSA from Hyde Park 2013. Always nice to have. It's up on amazon for limited time only (dont know how long that will be).

I salute you,
TS

Mongoose 11-26-2013 12:05 AM

Said on telegraph website that 41 Shots has only ever been played live...pretty sure its on The Essential?? Or similar.

Thunderstrucker 11-26-2013 01:14 PM

It is on The Essential but that also is the live version.
He gave LOHAD a proper studio version on Wrecking Ball and now 41 Shots on High Hopes. I don't mind. They are both good songs.

I salute you,
TS

What do you mean with your reply?

Mongoose 12-08-2013 11:12 PM

Yesh, that is a good setlist.

re; 41 shots. For some reason my version has been tagged up as "Studio Version" since forever, I've never actually noticed it's live..Still can't really, the audience must have been pretty quiet??

Right, so I just listened to a sample of the version on The Essential & that is quite obviously live. So my version isn't that one,

so. time for some googling:

In April 2001, a studio version of the song was released as a very rare U.S.-only 1-track radio promotional single on CD-R.[1]

:D

No idea where I got mine from, limewire probably

all this time. I never knew I had a "rare" version ;d

If there is already a studio version of this song I am even more wondering what the version on High Hopes will sound like :)

Although Amazon says only they have their limited edition offer I found it now as well on wowhd which is quite a lot cheaper then amazon for me. So, for the ones aiming to get it the cheapest, preorder it at wowhd.

The album has leaked. I did not have the chance to listen to it entirety but I do like what he did with 41 shots.

I have had it on order since I first heard about it. I just have trouble controlling my impulses when I find out that I can "pre-listen" LOL

Thunderstrucker 12-29-2013 10:13 PM

Well to be honest I am not that impressed with it so far. It sure will take a few more listens for some songs to grow but the way the album has come together feels a bit cheap to me. Covers, already existing songs etc. Then some of the new songs just sound like the songs they are: left-overs of previous albums. Not much songs on this album that I'd like to hear live, in comparison to Wrecking Ball.

I salute you,
TS

I sort of agree. Most of it I have heard in some form or other over the years. It's just not the same as having completely new music to discover.

Thunderstrucker 12-29-2013 11:04 PM

Exactly. I wouldn't release an album like this as new. I would sooner make it a bonus-cd to some sort of boxset or whatever. There are some good songs on it but it's no 'Magic' or 'Wrecking Ball'.

I salute you,
TS

IML88 12-30-2013 12:50 PM

Downloaded it yesterday as I couldnt wait until my pre-order came through.

I think its a fantastic effort. They key to enjoying it lies in how you judge it. I'm treating it as a collection of 12 individual songs as opposed to a full album like I usualy do with a Bruce release. There are some incredibly strong offerings on it.

Frankie is brilliant, Heavens Wall is catchy and cool. The studio takes of GOTJ and American Skin are class and bring something abit different to the official live releases we've had so far. High Hopes is a great cover as is Just Like Fire Would.

All in I think there are 6 or 7 really great songs and the rest are very listenable. I like it more than Wrecking Ball.

Thunderstrucker 12-30-2013 02:41 PM

I agree. You have to judge this one differently but there should be no need for that.

I find Heavens Wall as 'annoying' as 'High Hopes'. How many times can you put 'Raise Your Hand' in a song? They both are rated with only 2 stars in my iTunes.

The rating of this album from best to worse in my opinion is:

5 stars:
1. Ghost of Tom Joad
2. American Skin

4 stars:
3. Down In The Hole
4. Frankie Fell In Love
5. This Is Your Sword
6. The Wall
7. Dream Baby Dream

3 stars:
8. Harry's Place
9. Just Like Fire Would
10. Hunter of Invisible Game

2 stars:
11. Heavens Wall
12. High Hopes

Total 4 out of 5

In comparison to Wrecking Ball:
5 stars:
1. Land of Hope and Dreams (this is a top 5 Springsteen song for me)
2. Jack Of All Trades
3. We Are Alive

4 stars:
4. Shackled and Drawn
5. Death To My Hometown
6. Wrecking Ball
7. American Land

3 stars:
8. We Take Care Of Our Own
9. Easy Money
10. You've Got It
11. Rocky Ground

2 stars:
12. This Depression

1 star:
13. Swallowed Up

So I must admit. Where I was not a big fan of High Hopes from the start it is growing on me. The feeling that it doesn't feel like a proper Springsteen-album won't go away as it just isn't.
Another thing I really like is how is writing arrangements for more instruments as opposed to the standard guitar, piano, drums + occasional sax. I really like to hear poetic lyrics to be sang over layers of different instruments that carry the lyrics.

I salute you,
TS

So I got the limited edition of High Hopes. I had hoped it would be a special digipack with the CD and the bonusdvd. Turns out its just a digipack with the CD and a seperate cardboard sleeve with the DVD in it. Bit dissapointing. Luckily the content of the DVD makes up for it :)

One thing that sucks about modern albums is the fact they come in these stupid digipacks.

I'm all for saving the planet but not at the cost of cheap flimsy covers that get ruined at the first beer spill.

I've not had a proper listen to the album yet - once I was pretty drunk and the 2nd time I was pottering around doing stuff in the house.

I like it a lot so far and although it doesn't have an album feel to it, most of the songs stand out pretty well on their own.

I must say Morello's guitar on it is great.

My big worry is that this seems like a bit of a statement from Bruce - is he tying up loose ends and this is going to be the full stop at the end of the sentence? I'm not quite sure the album on it's own could justify a tour especially so soon after a monster one like Wrecking Ball.

Thunderstrucker 01-24-2014 12:53 PM

I must say I am a fan of digipacks. They have a more luxuery feel to it then normal plain jewelcases. Yes they get damaged quicker as well but still I always buy a digipack version over the normal jewelcase version if there is a choice. I buy them for collecting though so after I imported the album in my iTunes it hardly gets used again.

Also, I don't think people would worry about a tour about an album from Springsteen. I think a lot of fans, like me, would just be thrilled if he is going to tour again, new album or not. He got such a vast catalogue that songs of the new album wouldn't matter that much to the setlist.

I liked Magic a lot, did not like WOAD a lot, liked WB a lot, like High Hopes but not that much as magic or WB so in that flow I am sure I'll like his next album more :)

I salute you,
TS

Bruce Springsteen played 57 songs in their 3 shows in Capetown in past week
They have also started downloading of Live concerts in both mp3 and FLAC format starting with first Capetown store

Thunderstrucker 01-30-2014 02:07 PM

Holy shit! Tougher and Jack back to back! 2 of my favorite slower songs of Bruce. Awesome stuff! Also nice to see Sword premiered as that is one of my favorites of High Hopes. Good stuff!

I've not worked out who it is yet but some cat at my new local always plays Tougher Than the Rest on Saturday night.

I of course respond in kind with a bit of Jungleland and Racing in the Streets.

Thunderstrucker 01-31-2014 01:47 AM

I listen to the live version on Chimes of Freedom a lot! And lately I've been playing the harmonica solo with ease. Such a powerful song in my opinion as is JOAT so those 2 back to back are a very good combination.
I got Racing In The Street last June which also has something magical.
I cannot say Cape Town got epic shows but they sure got good ones!

Nice to see Tougher gets some appreciation at your new local :)

I salute you,
TS
