Probably three of my favourite songs there (Bosswise), I reckon Paradise could nestle in there too as it's a similar sort of song to Devils Arcade (methinks) |

Of course most of those hard copy sales are probably longtime fans like myself who will always buy the CD. |

That speech just makes me love Bruce even more. What a man. He's funny, wise, unassuming, intelligent and just gets "it". I wish he lived at the bottom of my garden. I'd visit him every night and just talk to him for hours.

"I Don't like talking, it's a secret"... or something similar, what's that from? Some boot?

Sucks to be living in such a small country sometimes. My copy of Wrecking Ball only arrived 2 days ago and I finally got a first listen yesterday. Rocky Ground is an early favorite, great single selection. It's radio-friendly in a good way as opposed to other more folk-ish tunes, which I'm not a huge fan of. Land Of Hopes And Dreams was also a highlight but the impression kinda decreased when I found out this song was written more than 10 years ago and was released in Live in NYC DVD (Which I saw when I was getting to know Bruce and knew very few songs). The production doesn't do it for me. I am not a big fan of Bruce's vocal sound in the last few albums. I just rewatched his great Grammy performance of We Take Care and in the opening verse he sounds much better than on the record. It just seems that during live performances he drops that rasp and sounds more like his old-self from 70s and 80s whereas in 2000s albums he sounds too raspy. However, the album itself is not bad at all and I hope to be loving it after a few more listens, especially when the feedback is mostly positive :)

My opinion is that Bruce always sounds more alive when performing live then when being heard on his studio-albums. Then again WB comes close to Magic when it comes to production and I think it works pretty well.
Referring to LOHAD; No version beats the one that you can see and hear on the Barcelona-DVD. Though it is still nice to have a studio-version of the song as well. 'American Land' isnt exactly a new song either and was on the American Edition of The Seeger Sessions as well but this one is a slightly other version. I prefer an artist to make 10 good songs (including revamped old ones) then make 14 average one to fill up a CD ;) I salute you, TS |
BRUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCE!
Opening night of the Wrecking Ball tour is tonight here in Atlanta. Fingers crossed that I'm lucky enough in the wristband lottery to get in the pit! |
Good luck and have a great night. :)
I hope we can read your review in the next days. |

How was it Terri? Badlands -> Death To My Hometown -> My City of Ruins seems like a killer 3-pack. |
The show only ended a couple of hours ago, so this is still pretty much spur of moment reaction. I enjoyed the show a lot, but I didn't come out of it absolutely euphoric like I usually do from a Bruce show. The WB songs went over fairly well, but they just don't feel like E Street Band music to me. There were so many Gaelic-influenced songs in the setlist that the rock & roll kind of got lost. (Considering how much of that type of music is on WB, American Land really needs to be dropped.) Charlie was constantly playing his accordion, and Soozie seemed to play a bigger role than either Nils or Steve. You know me - I want to hear guitar solos! By the time you add in the songs that have a gospel/revival basis, the whole show ends up with a bit of an odd feel. Definitely not like the WOAD shows. I loved the horns, though. They're a glorious addition. In spite of the fact that there are two saxophonists, Jake Clemons has the bulk of the big solos. Ed Mannion seems to be in a supporting role. No Bruce show is actually short, but this felt short. IMO, it needed one of the big epics. Maybe it didn't have one because this was the first show of the tour. Time will tell.
BTW, the gods were not with me when it came to pit lottery. I had wristband number 742, and they pulled 767. They gave out over 1000 wristbands and only let 350 into the pit. And I missed it by 25. :( A random thought - Jack of All Trades is a terrific song (even if the guys in front of me had to have a conversation through it), but LOHAD is still the best song on WB. It was magnificent. |
I dont know what you are doing at a BS-concert if you are talking through a song like JOAT (or talk through any song at all) which is in my opinion the most meaningful song on WB. LOHAD will probably still work best live but then again, that song has been played live a lot over the years so it has some polish. When I see the setlist my first thought was that you miss out on that specific Bruce-spark that you get and see normally.
They are just warming up, I'm sure :) I salute you, TS |

It's equally good to me compaired with the show before this one to be honest.
Still missing some gems in the setlist or maybe I got to spoiled over the last years with Bruce's setlists ;) I salute you, TS |
As a casual Bruce fan, I don't get why they're playing such short sets this tour? I mean, the only member who passed away was Clarence and he was the weakest phisically, so if everyone is the same (plus a few younger musicians), it doesn't make sense for them to slow down compared to WOAD tour, right?
However, I love how these sets are heavy on new songs. Take notes, Jon! |
Perhaps they are still rehearsing other songs or polishing them before playing them at concerts.
Shorter isnt always a bad thing :) I salute you, TS |

I really can't write much of an unbiased review. I was so upset after Clarence died last summer that when a new tour was announced I decided to buy tickets to as many close shows as I could (no airplanes but driving was fine). This was due to thinking that there are 2 members missing and and at any time this whole band thing could come to a halt. Not to mention that I'm not getting any younger either. I wound up with 7 shows and the first 2 are over.
There is no point is discussing individual songs here, there are plenty of Bruce sites where you can get that type of discussion. But the overall show - the musicianship - is the best I have ever seen. In the first six official shows, this band has played 42 different songs. Considering the scant amount of time the new members have had to learn and rehearse many of these, especially the rarer numbers, I am in awe. Many bands, even when playing with only the core members, still stick to a fairly rigid setlist (such as our favorite Bon Jovi band) and are very hesitant to try something old and unrehearsed. However the rate at which Bruce is dropping tour premiers puts this whole group on another level. And Bruce is in top shape. His voice sounds better than ever - he has more energy than ever and he is lighting the place up with his enthusiasm. After only 6 shows they are almost at 3 hours, even in a 2 night stand. All I can say is that if you can go see them I would recommend that you do. They won't be around forever and it would be a shame to miss such a good show. |
