Bon Jovi on social network sites

Found this interesting:

On Twitter Bon Jovi has 490,000 followers. Katy Perry has 14.2m followers.

On Facebook Bon Jovi have an impressive 15,667,452 members (likes) but Katy Perry has 38,701,313

Now do we put this down to Bon Jovi having older fans who may not want to "like" a Facebook page or "follow" tweets or is it that Katy Perry tweets her own stuff whereas Bon Jovi's is clearly not done by the band but instead done by someone in an office paid to do so.

Bon Jovi's tweets dont sound personal enough they all reek of a (really poor) marketing/media dept and the facebook page is too formal.

Am I looking too much into this or is it that in a time where these social media sites play such a huge part in peoples lives Bon Jovi have missed a trick and need to be more in touch with their fans??

Well, I can tell you that I'm 35, and I've never tweeted one time in my life.

I think you can chalk it up to Katy Perry appealing to 12 year old girls who do nothing but tweet and spend time on Facebook.

Let's see Katy Perry sell out an 80,000 seat stadium.

Agreed. It's more this than the impersonal nature of the Jovi social network profiles/pages. Often you don't find out about how an offical social network page for fans is run until you've joined it anyway.

I dont like the Jovi tweets. They are to formal and done by a marketing bod

I doubt that Kathy Perry will have even 15 Mill. followes on FB after 30 years.

The audience of her are teenagers that use social media way more than "older" people.

Yup. To think there's people refusing to follow or like the band because the tweets look fake is pretty foolish. Most tweets and updates are done by the social media teams at the labels. Some just hide it much better.

Katy Perry is a guilty pleasure of mine. Love Love Love Love Her. I don't care to compare her popularity to that of Bon Jovi.

Bon Jovi's Twitter is just another way for them to flog their products. If Jon actually went to the bother of using it himself they would get alot more followers.
Richie seems to have woken up to the fact that Twitter exists but Jon won't have any part of it.
I don't want him to be one of these sad celebrities that feels the need to share with us his every move, but just the occasional message would be nice.

I think if they had more "personal" feeling tweets they would get more followers because people would be more likely to retweet them to their friends who, in turn, would think that Bon Jovi was cool and follow them.

This. Katy Perry probably has a whole team back in EMI's offices devoted to twitter and facebook, particularly around release/tour time. Jon should really let Universal do it for the band but... he likes to keep as much in control as he can - which is good business sense in one way, but in another very real way he/his team is rubbish at it.
