Solo in If I Was Your Mother

Last Saturday I had quite an interesting conversation with the guitar player of Bounce before their gig. I had asked him if they could do IIWYM and he said that he doesn't like playing that song much. He said that the song drowns during the first part of the solo as it would be almost impossible to play and he added that he isn't sure if Richie really played it the way we hear it on the record as it sounds more kind of "constructed" to him. I'm not a musician myself, but after that I went and watched some videos and realized that both the live performances of Bounce and BJ differed very much during the beginning of the solo. What do you guys think?

Well the Quebec '93 quality is pretty poor so the song drifts the whole way through, i just think that's poor audio.

And as far as I can tell from the Bounce performance he's just not playing it right.

Don't know what you guys are on about, the first half of the solo is easy as **** and that Bounce guy plays it ok, in his own style so it's not copyed note-for-note. It's the last few seconds he messes up a few notes.
And yes the solo might be "constructed" in the studio, this is common working in the studio, he records loads (or just a few) of takes of the solo and they take the best parts of each take and make one. Not saying some of his solos aren't a single-take, just that this is common practise, same with vocals (and probably with some bands; all instruments).

Yeah so you just backed up my point? I said he's not playing it right - i.e. not the same as the album, so therefore you know exactly what I'm on about.

Seems I had a bit of a brain fart; I meant to say don't know what that guy is on about, meaning the guitarist.
