Best Song Lyrics
I have enjoyed Savvi's album threads so much, I thought I'd give this a try. I think it would be interesting to see what we think Bon Jovi's best song lyrically is. Lyrical content is most subjective... should make for interesting discussion.
I will eventually poll it but I need our favorite 10 songs for the poll. So let's start by using the point system. Give me your top 5 (5 points to your favorite and so on). After a few days, I will tally the votes and make a poll. Let's be clear on what we are voting on. Not your favorite song. Not your favorite lyrics to a chorus or bridge. This is your opinion as to what BJ song, in it's entirety, has the best lyrics. Pretend there is no music, only words on the page. For instance, As My Guitar Lies Bleeding In My Arms is one of my favorite songs ever. The lyrics are very moving to me. But when really thinking about it, that is because it works so well with the music, atmosphere, and especially with Richie's guitar. The lyrics on the page, without the music, don't stand up on their own well. Thus, not making my list. Also, let's not use solo songs (sorry, no Santa Fe), but everything else is fair game. |
05 Pts: Bed of Roses -
From beginning to end BOR is poetry. It also seems so personal and sincerely vulnerable... plus not one cliche! Hands down their best lyrics. It took a while for me to come to this conclusion, but since I've found there was really no other option. 04 Pts: (It's So Hard) Letting You Go - Again very poetic. Like As My Guitar, the music and atmosphere lends a lot of emotion to the song, but when reading the lyrics, I've found they are perfect. You can't write lyrics for a death or tragic break up better than this (music either for that matter... possibly their most perfect song). 03 Pts: Postcards From the Wastelands - Unfortunately the music couldn't hold it's own with these lyrics. On the page, the lyrics are close to perfection. 02 Pts: These Days - The opening verse says it all. 01 Pt: Say It Isn't So - This was a tough one. It was between this, Undivided, Dry County, and a hand full of others. But I went with SIIS. It explores several interesting, unexplored topics, written in unique ways and ties them together with the chorus. Pretty clever. |
I was thinging about this topic many times before. It's hard topic because we must compare lyrics with many different style. How compare great funny Captain/SIISo lyrics with deep lyrics from WLOAL or STBIn?? So i decided to put 5 greatest lyrics from 5 different categories.
Funny: My vote goes for "Captain Crash & Beauty Queen From Mars". I choose from Captain and SIISo. Many people don't like it but I think that they had big eggs to make thats crazy lyrics. I really enjoy lyrics. With SIIS their best funny lyrics. Mature (Life/Living/Death/Pain): WLOALeaving - very, very hard to choose. They have many mature lyrics like DCounty, KTF, AOD, SIBSNight, IBelieve or STBIn but WLOAL is masterpiece for me. It's say all about lost love, about death, about most sadnes things in our lives. "I close my eyes and picture your hand in mine" probably one of the most beautifull and touching words which I've ever read. I feel nostalgia in every word. Angry: IWTBLoved - Jon not singing it in bery angry way but I feel many of thats feeling on it. "No-one was tere when I was in need" / I can forgive you, but I won't relive you" / "Don't you know that ain't how it's suppose to be".... angry, angry, angry. I was choosing from this, HNow, HGod, Love: DLSecret - Very mature, sexy and dirty lyrics. Tell us about this dark side of love. I love it. Optimistic: IMLife - Simply, smart and have all what energetic / power lyrics should have. + I should add one more category - Storytelling and my vote would go for.. Kidnap An Angel Points go from (5) category which is most deep to (1) optimist. I love deep lyric most and I think they are harder to write than optimistic, so... 5 - Whole Lot Of A Leaving 4 - I Want To Be Loved 3 - Dirty Little Secret 2 - Captain Crash... 1 - It's My Life |
Can we do top 10? lol, I cant narrow it down to just 5! haha
Gotta think about it. |
This is a very hard choice!
05 - Dry County Long and deep lyrics. It's beautiful, from the first letter to the last. The part that says "It was like my soul's on fire, and I had to watch the flames. All my dreams went up in ashes, and my future blew away" is unbelievable. 04 - These Days Great lyrics with a lot of metaphores. The part about Jimmy Shoes, Rome that's still burning. I think the whole text is a metaphore, it's real poetry to my ears and the way some things are explained is simply great and amazing. 03 - River Runs Dry Great great lyrics. Nothing else to say. "You can lead a horse to water, but there's nothing anybody can do when the rivers run dry" 02 - Keep The Faith The song gives me power. The lyrics even more: this is why I think this is their greatest stadium anthem. If you're losing hope and faith in what you do/are, just read the lines of this song. 01 - In These Arms I think this is their most beautiful love song. So I think the same about the lyrics. I love its lyrics, the metaphores in it are amazing: "Like the poet needs the pain, like the roses need the rain, like the seasons need to change"... What else can you say? It's a beautiful love dedication. Sometimes I wish I was the one to write those lines... |
1 - (It's Hard) Letting You Go
2 - Something To Believe In 3 - These Days 4 - Dry County 5 - Never Say Goodbye (don't care if it's cheesy) |
Quote:
This is tough: to narrow it down and put it in an order. They ain't Bob Dylan for sure, but I'm really fond of some lyrics, really. If I could I'd put "Novocaine" in there as well. And sth I forgot. 5. Bed Of Roses 4. Dry County 3. Last Man Standing 2. These Days 1. (It's Hard) Letting You Go |
Everything on the Blaze Of Glory Soundtrack esp Santa Fe
|
Bed of Roses (so honest and from the heart- Jon was obviously in a saddened and retrospective place when he wrote this. It saddens me that now he has said he does not allow himself to write anymore downer songs like that as he wants the bands message to be uplifting, such a waste).
Santa Fe (if you listen to the lyrics you will see that the protagonist moves through a range of emotions throughout the song from being in denial and trying to tell himself that he is invincible, to trying to justify his actions to his own conscience, to showing some remorse and vulnerability) |
I'm going to have to put a lot of thought into the others, going soley by lyrics. That said, These Days instantly popped into my head.
