'No higher than a G or How Jon is allegedly going to kill Living on a prayer'
just watched that 'Behind the scenes' video about the upcoming tour where they state that Jon is not switching keys for the Prayer finale. Did I get that right ?? The guy's explaining how Jon learned not to write stuff he won't be able to replicate live night after night and then mentioned the key-switch finale of Living on a prayer. at this moment the anchor says 'so he won't be doing that'. I highly doubt it but what r your thoughts ?
the video was posted elsewhere on this board but here it is: http://live.wsj.com/video/behind-the...6-F8CBB7A7ECC9 |
Isn't G the highest he'll sing in the key change? The higher part is handled by the band/tapes right?

The highest note in LOAP before the modulation ("key change") is a high C. The same note that is in the long "livin' on a prayer" right before the solo. With the bands' instruments tuned down half (or a whole) step, he can hit it, usually. After the modulation (where LOAP goes from Em/G to Gm/Eb), the highest note would be D#. Jon hasn't hit that live in decades, even with down-tuned instruments. Ice |

If they tune down a half step though that makes the highest note a D, and if it's a whole step that makes it a Db. Either way, Jon hasn't sung the key change in forever. The highest note prior to the key change is C, but again, if you tune it down it's either a B or Bb. Of course he doesn't sing that either save for the one time prior to the solo.

Prayer is played in the key of D# minor since the instruments are tuned down half a step. meaning that the key changes to F# minor on the last chorus. anyways, he never sings the 'living on a prayer' bit save for the line before the solo. meaning the highest note he's expected to hit is the one on the last chorus would be the one where he sings 'MY' on 'take MY hand', the usually flattens it live anyways.
What I fear is that they don't to the key change (for the last chorus) anymore thought that would be a MAJOR turn off so I doubt it'll happen. Let's face it, that's the climax of the song, especially live. All this talk about key changes may mean one thing though: they might tune their instrument a WHOLE step down on certain songs. so prayer would be played in D minor and transposed to F minor on the last chorus. I doubt that would make it sound too different and hardly anyone would notice it. I've been blabbing about this for a long time. they should tune a whole step down on certain songs. plus, with all those guitars and basses and a dozen of roadies, they could swap instruments in no time. That would be the ONLY reasonable thing for Jon to do. Prayer remains a big turn off in general for me when I saw them live and even when I watch the videos on youtube. It hasn't sounded decent in a decade. I liked how it sounded on the these days tour and even on the crush-OWL tours. and that was it. |

Jon can't sing rock in his lower register. He can't sound tough and believeable. I love it when he sings with the rasp of the 80's and in the high register. After 2000 he's been going lower and lower with every album, and in the same time lost all the power he had. So, IMO, if all the vocal notes stay in the lower register, the new album will not rock.
