The fans must be given an option to add the album to the ticket purchase.

Prince, Tom Petty and Madonna did it in 2004, 2010 and 2012 respectively.

Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't Bon Jovi do it with Lost Highway?

yes they did it for the prudential center tickets ..I got 9 albums

You are correct.

Well to be fair, for an older band such as theirs, the crowd demographic in Europe at least is very mixed, with a considerable younger element, in comparison to a lot of other bands of similar age. It's something I've always noticed, and something Jon is very proud of, this cross generation appeal they have.
The crowd/fanbase would have a had a very different make up if IML had not been the hit it was, and in turn the music would have reflected this...probably for the better.

It's hard to explain the sudden change in direction. These Days into Destination Anywhere - very introspective and moody records, with strong dynamic song writing and definite growth and mature sounding music, then boom! Crush totally resets the dial and goes for the mass market formulaic safe route, and with only a few exceptions, we have been on this path ever since.

The thing is, this 'path' sells more records than the direction they seemed to be heading in the 90s. It is probably a simple marketing decision.

It's My Life pretty much changed the bands direction. That one song was huge and they've been chasing the follow up ever since and failing.
I wonder where they would be now if that song didn't exist?
I guess their career path could have followed Def Leppard and struggled to get any kind of exposure and playing the 80's circuit or their career could have been more organic and they just wrote music purely from an artistic point of view instead of always trying to keep up with the Joneses. Either way I guess the album sales would have plummeted more quickly instead of the gradual decline we've seen.

I think the last truly global successful album for the band was HAND. The title track was a global hit (even though it reached only #53 on the USA charts, it didn't include the iTunes sales of the single which is now part of the equation when determining chart postion. HAND the single has been certified gold with sales of 500,000) it's still a hit song, it had radio play power & was a top ten hit all over the world. With the success of the HAND album/single (with wsycgh in North America) I feel the band has been trying to copy this success with the circle, the new songs on the greatest hits & WAN. Lost Highway was really successful in North America. Make a memory is safe to say was their last global hit in 2007 and was the reason why lost highway the album debut at #1 all over the world and help sell 4 million. I believe the HAND album brought the band to the elite level when it comes to touring (the same as the stones/U2/Bruce) and believe the band shifted more towards touring since 05/06 to expand its global fan base instead of trying to do it through music. Basically from 05 to 08, 10-11, and now 13-14 the band has been touring to expand its audience. The cd sales are down but each tour keeps getting bigger in attendance & $$$. I think the problem with the last few Jovi albums is that nobody (the band members & John shanks) brings new stimulus/ideas when beginning a new project. After this album the best thing for the band to do is record a album with no restrictions and have a new producer who could contribute objectively to the bands sound, much like Shanks did with the HAND album when he first met the band. Despite the decline in the bands album sales/radio airplay over the last several years, a#1 is still a #1. Their fourth decade of having #1 albums is astonishing and mind blowing. People compare different eras when it comes to statistical data, but given the climate of the music industry and all the other genres of music, Bon Jovi is still standing & thriving.

Completely agree. I like a lot the new album. There are some songs that are just ok, like all of their albums, but the whole album is better IMHO than The Circle or Lost Highway.

Good grief on the US charts..Justin Timberlake's cd is gold++ out of the gate and will probably be platinum next week...everything else, not even close. Looks like Jovi should stay in the top 10.

With 70% results in from Soundscan Justin Timberlake 20/20 has sold 760,542 units Bon Jovi is no 6 with 25.863 units sold in the United States

What depresses me somewhat about the bon jovi ''fanbase'', and i use the term 'fan' loosely, is that if every fan going to say just one show, like Hyde Park for example, actually went out and bought/downloaded the new album of the artist they are going to support, the figures would be vastly more impressive. Standing in a stadium, looking round and realising that most of the people there don't know the new stuff, or even anything not from the 80s, sucks.

I know that one of the first things I do when I buy tickets to a show for any artist is check out the new record and make sure I know some of the tunes. Makes sense if its a tour supporting new material you would think. Even taking into account illegal downloading, legal streaming or the fact that some just don't like the new stuff, if even a fraction of the casual bon jovi fanbase bothered to buy the new material the sales figures would be a lot more impressive. This summer, they must be playing to over 250,000 in the UK alone, if even half of them bought the new album that's a Gold album already.

Andi

Great post. Also what i do not get is how they brag they have 20M fans on facebook and the album will struggle to sell 1M copies.

Amen! Even if 10% of the so called "fans" would buy the album, it would sell 2M globally, but no...
