Best Opening Track?
What's the best opening track on an album in your opinion?
My pick is I Believe. It sets the mood for a rejuvenated band and a fresh, exciting album. |
Prayer should have opened Slippery in my opinion, it would have been perfect. As it stands, it's still a great opener for their two greatest hits albums. But yeah, you mean proper albums...
I Believe probably too - it means something, and it's a real statement from the band, cool build up. Lay your hands is such a cool way to start an album too with THAT intro however...even though I'm not a big fan of the song.. Andi |
Lay Your Hands on Me, fantastic track from a band at its peak.

From Slippery to These Days all of the first tracks seem like great openers. They may not (or may to some people) be the best songs of the album, but they all served the purpose of opening their respective albums. It's a shame that it ended with 2000s and since Crush there's a trend to most often have a lead single kick of the album, which makes for very little (or none in Because We Can's case) build-up to kick things off. Undivided is the exception and, while a great song, does seem out of place as an opener. I much prefer when lead singles are in 2-4 slots.
But if I had to pick one, I'd also go with I Believe, but once again, from the "big four" (and even Billy from Blaze) they're all great. |
Definitely I Believe. Out of the post-2000 efforts I think Lost Highway best serves that purpose in setting up for the album.

I love Last Man Standing, but Jon should have a gibson les paul instead of an acoustic guitar.
"brokenpromiseland" would have been the perfect opener for circle tour, and "we weren't born to follow" second song from setlist. Bad name not is the better, would have better results with "What About Now" like album's title, or returning to the classic opener Living on a Prayer. |

Have A Nice Day or Runaway for me. Both very good tracks that set the tune for the rest of the record.
Hey God has the honor to be the track that is by far the best on the album - for the first couple of spins, I didn't like anything else on These Days all that much. Especially the title track has grown on me, but IMO, Hey God is by FAR the best choice to open the album with. The same also goes to It's My Life, but there's other stuff on Crush that I also instantly liked. |
I'd go with I Believe.
Hey God was also impressive as an opener. They meant business. |
Hey God, I Believe, Lay your Hands on Me, Runaway and It's My Life are all great openers! Cannot choose just one.
