Phil X dislike(d) Bon Jovi?
A friend of mine told me on Twitter that Phil X used to used to laugh and make fun of Bon Jovi before he played with them on the Live 2011 Tour. He also told me that in several guitar forums they where shocked to see that Phil would play with the band because of this.
On this video he showed me, Phil says at the beginning "It was played by Richie Sambora... you know how I feel about that, but we won't get into it", among other things. Does anyone have an interview where he talks bad about Bon Jovi? Or Richie? Or what's the story about this? I just can't understand why somebody would make fun of a band and then would play for them. |

When he says, "you know how I feel about that," I always associated it with where he'd signed the guitar - on the body in full view. I don't think he has anything personal against Richie.
With regards to his opinions on Bon Jovi, however, I think there were some links or quotes thrown around that back up the idea that he thinks they're pish. |
Yeah, it's definitely that he hates guitars being signed.
Regardless of his opinions of the band, I'm sure he's not hating the paycheck. |
Gibson 2002 Flying V PART 2 00745
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=nC6wDeC_tPE The video's set to private, but in that second part of the video Phil kept referring to the guitar once belonging to Richie SamBORING! |
Thank you all for your answers, didn't knew he hated the guitars being signed. Interesting fact and explains a lot.

If he's a metal-head, it makes sense for him to hate Bon Jovi, it's the cool thing to do. But I'm sure he loves money more, considering he has played with Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson, according to Wiki.
That video is really entertaining though, would love to see part 2. |
What a sell-out... But he fits well with Jon..They both care about the $$$.
|
I'm sure he enjoys playing the classics, and you can certainly see that from the videos when he gets to shred and let loose a bit on the earlier stuff (LYHOM, KTF, BAd Mx etc)
However, I'm pretty sure that someone with his shredding capabilities and hard rock background that standing there strumming chords to something like 'Because We Can' or 'What about now' he must be quietly thinking ''WTF is this shit??'', as it's a world away from what he must listen to. But he's there to do a job, and pick up the paycheck. I've worked in jobs before that I have no interest or passion for the product whatsoever, but as I have experience in that field and am getting paid, I tend to shut up and just do the job. I like Phil X, and like the way he has conducted himself on his stints with Bon Jovi. Even if a lot of the newer Jovi stuff is a world away from what he usually plays and so is actually beneath him, I like to think that it is general love of playing live music and jamming in general (along with the huge paycheck of course) that he loves. He's not a metalhead. He's played a lot of hard rock. If you watch his Fretted Americana videos it's a pretty varied selection.
Whoever said any video where he mentions the band in a negative light was switched to private in 2011 was dead on. I always got the impression the band wasn't his cup of tea. I know he mentioned the phrase "Don't bore us, get to the chorus" when talking about the band. Kind of funny, I wish they had longer verses. |
Then why is he there playing with the band? Can't the get someone else?
Insulting Richie, not liking the music - yet he is onstage and collecting the money. Sounds more like a big mouth to me. |

The man can have his own opinion, he is not a band member and part of Jon's ''vision'' - he is a hired session player to cover guitar parts, which is exactly what he is doing. He is saving their asses at the moment, and for that I am grateful. I'd jam as a session player for nearly anybody if asked. And Phil obviously likes some of the classic stuff, you can see he enjoys it. Phil X @TheRealPhilX 21h had a great time in Winnipeg last night. the crowd was INSANE! anyone have footage of Keep The Faith? it had some special moments for me. I don't see the problem, it's not like he's slagging the band off now whilst he is with them. He's a professional. Andi |

It's my understanding Phil X & Jon have run in the same music circles for many years--they go waaaay back. Phil X & Jon are real cool with each other--he's not commented a lot on Richie. Phil will competently and professionally play anything--he's well-known & highly regarded in the LA music scene. Personally, I think he's a great dude, very kind & fun-loving. Being an almost lifelong Bon Jovi fan, I'm more than happy to throw all my support Phil's way during his second stretch with the band...

He was in Aldo Nova's touring band for "Blood on the Bricks" that Jon produced so you know it goes back awhile. For anyone who doesn't remember Phil spilled the beans a bit and did session work on "What do ya got?".

Jon hates half the songs himself, so how could he blame an outsider for not liking them. Didn't Jon say more than once that his music is not even his own wife's cup of tea?
Personally if it was me and I would not have him around if he had said those things. However, it does not seem to bother Jon or he simply does not know he has said them. Either way it is no problem for me if he is around and doesn't like the music that much. |
nobody hates Bon Jovi as in HATES them (other than that obsessed guy who was posting here). Let's face it, a band that has written Wanted Dead or Alive will inspire some form of admiration from any musician, from anyone who has ever picked up a guitar. Even Lars Ulrich ended up saying that it's one of the greatest road songs ever written.
At the same time, it's IMPOSSIBLE to not be cynical about Bon Jovi. Just listen to all the junk that they have written over the years, especially in more recent years. And again, anyone with a musical talent of some sort will call Because We Can and that sort 'JUNK'. Phil X is no different. I'm sure he loves the classics - the fact that Jon let him sing the second verse of Wanted last time around is proof enough. He wanted to be part of it. And when you see him jam on Faith or on Lay Your Hands On Me - he looks on fire. There's no way a hard rock guitar player doesn't enjoy jamming on those. Impossible. So, in other words, Phil X is just a man with an objective opinion, and the attitude and body language of a 17 year old kid who is just about to start his first rock band. I really really dig him and whichever way Jon picked him, respect! Having said that, the DRILLS suck balls and he can't sing for his life. But hell, he's a great guitar player. |

those comments are just his sense of humour... he has a big mouth and tries to be funny - given that the majority of people you see at drills gigs are stuck up guitarists who worship steve vai (note: got nothing against vai, just stuck up guitarists) that sort of thing is gonna go down well...
I also think he's a better singer than he is a guitarist... he's great at playing stuff other people have written but his own solos tend to be a bit 'hey look what I can do while adding literally nothing worthwhile to this song' - he's written some cool riffs though. |

Just noticed on http://www.philx.tv/discography.html, Phil calls ''Living on a prayer'' one of the greatest songs ever written, and he says how ''killer'' it was to be in Jons house jamming with him and Tico etc. Plus all his tweets sound like he's having a great time.
The guys a fan, but obviously like a lot of us here..probably isn't too crazy about the newer stuff. But then again, he's jammed for a lot pop artists too, so who knows, he might love BWC for all we know. Andi |
