Agatha Christie & Bon Jovi

Yes... I know it sounds a little odd but...

I've been reading lots of Agatha's stories lately and I came up with this crazy idea of comparing her writing with Bon Jovi's (not only lyrical).

I mean, Agatha Christie was a mediocre writer at her best, at least, when it comes to poetry flourish and literary adornment. She just wanted to get straight to the point. Her only intention was to play with the reader and make him/her take part of the game. There was no further intention, no writing ambition to become critically acclaimed. But she was indeed one of the best at her specific matter.

And that's where I think Bon Jovi have something in common. Well, most of it. We all know Jon's idea about winning the crowd with this powerful melodic anthems, easy-cheesy-relate-on lyrics and giving great performances on stage. We've had great albums but lyrically and musically, Bon Jovi have never been Queen nor Pink Floyd. They never intended to be neither. And we shoud start thinking that "These Days" was a punctual highlight, a once in a lifetime release because that's the only one we've got during 30 years of career. Bon Jovi's always been more of a "Slippery" kind of writing than "These Days". You know, upbeat and simple songs. No musical flourish nor great effort arranging songs.

When we finally understand that, we'll be able to fully enjoy Bon Jovi nowadays stuff.

I understand what you're trying to say, but accepting the fact that Bon Jovi's current musical direction is simplistic and cheesy isn't going to make me love it .. Or even like it. The fact that they once made a These Days proves that they have it in them. They just don't care to make a record with similar depth...because they are afraid it won't sell. They are able to do it, they just don't want to.
Also, their music today is also soulless and forgettable...That is the difference between past Bon Jovi and current Bon Jovi. The 80s records may have been cheesey but they were honest and they had heart.

Totally agree with you.

But still, my opinion is that we shouldn't expect "These Days direction" for it was the only one "different" album of a dozen (half a dozen at the time).

Well said.

I have often made those comparisons to Stephen King... Long career with a lot of hard work and output. Most of the material stays pretty close to what they do best. Never loved by the critics. Resent output isn't as consistent as their older stuff.

And though Jon has made it himself, his comparison to Tom Cruise isn't bad either.

All we have mentioned are very good at what they do, and for that reason they will be appreciated by pop culture, but not critics.

Actually a nice insight. Yeah These Days was always an exception, not a rule.

This thread isn't about what I expected when I read the name. I thought we were hiring Agatha to find out what was up with Richie!
