What's It Like To Be A Guy Fan & Why So Much Shit?
Jon Bon Jovi is not the only known good looking rock star plus rock stars are known to be sex symbols as a whole so why so much shit for this one?
Why is it cool for a guy to be a Maroon 5 fan and like Adam Levine? Axl Roses was just as pretty so why is it cool to be a GnR fan? Why it cool for a guy to like Elvis? Musically, The Beetles sang love songs and so did so many other acts. Bon Jovi were never as corny as Nelson or David Hasselhoff (Sorry German Fans). Growing up I was the bud of a lot of harmless jokes that I've been able to laugh off. I still get some shit but it's not as bad. For me, I was a fan of Bon Jovi before it was cool to hate Bon Jovi. When it became uncool, I stuck with it and could now sit back and say that I didn't follow that fad. I grew up one town over from Jon. Our towns actually connect and I still drive through it all the time. Because of that, I have always had some sort of connection with them. We have a relatable background. I could still like other music but I don't necessarily relate to the artists. Sorry Limp Biscuit, you are just not my thing. Musically, I'm a sucker for the corny hook songs. That's what growing up in the 80's was all about. The corny catchy hook and Bon Jovi were the king of them but knew how to take the corny out. Someone dictating weather it's cool to like something or not cannot change what my ears like. Little by little as you grow up, you realize that there are more and more closet guy fans. You also find guys who didn't like them in the 80s say that Bon Jovi was good back in the day but their new music sucks.... Wait, but you didn't like Bon Jovi in the 80's. And let’s not forget the concerts. There are more dudes at the concerts in Jersey than chicks. Oh yea, they go for the chicks. Sure... Actually, when Bon Jovi or Bruce play in Jersey it becomes the Super Bowl of the state. All hating rules are off. That's my quick summary. What do others think? |
Because he shakes his ass so much, used to look like a woman, and sings a lot of songs like a pussy.

Because women die for Jon Bon Jovi and they're jealous. When I was in school, people would say "Bon Jovi is a band for faggots" "They're commercial shit" "Only girls listen to Bon Jovi". I never gave a crap, I just wasn't the kind of guy that would change his tastes to get people to like him more.
What's funny is that most of people that said those things to me, actually listen to Bon Jovi. The most metalhead guy in my school shared the other day "You Had Me From Hello" by Bon Jovi. I don't know why is cool to listen to GnR and not to Bon Jovi. Maybe because Axl is a moron that makes wait his fans 3 hours under the rain, and has that though guy appearance, people might dig that. I don't know. Lots of people that said that Bon Jovi was crap apologised to me after they listen to the whole These Days album. I honestly believe that they hate them because it's cool to hate them, and because they're jealous that Jon is hot and they're not. |
Its because they made uncool music since "Crush".

^^Pretty much this. I always said, if Jon Bon Jovi looked like John Popper, no one would give a toss about guys liking the band. But because he looks the way he does, guys feel too insecure about liking them. Took me a while to realize, that says more about those people than it does about me.
OT, but I remember the most embarrassing moment of my life. I was about 12 years old. I was walking through a mall with my Dad and my sister, and had a jean jacket with a Bon Jovi patch on the back. These 3 teenage girls started yelling from across the mall "BON JOVI'S GAY, BON JOVI'S A FAGGOTT!" I honestly never was able to understand what possessed kids to be so cruel to other kids. |
You've got to remember that the general public does not listen to albums, they only hear the singles which are played on the radio. And Bon Jovi tend to choose the simplest most clichéd songs as singles. So they partly have themselves to blame for the public perception. e.g. why would anyone think that 'we weren't born to follow' was the best choice?
Apart from that sadly yeah; people are prejudiced against Bon Jovi. And as Rdkopper alluded to I strongly feel that they have suffered a lot over the years because most guys would not want to be associated with them publicly. Impossible to put a definitive number on it but obviously this has cost them in the way of album and ticket sales too. Even I have to admit that as a guy and a Bon Jovi fan I am embarrassed by the behavior of the sub-section of female fans who are more interested in Jon than music. |

In all fairness, he didn't really shake his ass too much back in the day. He does it more so now. Again, it was the 80's. Axl looked like a chick and shook his ass too. |
Why would anyone care if he's cool or not? Or what anyone else thinks of him? If that kind of thing bothers you, I say grow a pair.
And for what it's worth, I love Nelson. They still rock harder than Bon Jovi. And are not ashamed of their past. And they can still sing. Ice |
Also, another thing that's bad advertising for the band: their fans. And I'm not taling about you, or me, or any member of this forum. I'm speaking of the "casual fans". You go to the Bon Jovi fanclub and you'll find that the 90% of the members, at least in the Argentina one, are 40-50 fat housewifes that only post Jon Bon Jovi pictures and say how hot he is.
The other day a 50+ grandmother uploaded pictures in underwear "so Bon Jovi could come to Argentina" (then she said that it wasn't for this) but it was on the local news, and it was disgusting at its most. I didn't even knew where to hide myself! My friends started sharing that link to me, I could only laugh, but I was mad. Really mad. |
