Hand Album

So i haven't played this album for about 3 years now i bet, put had it on in my car for last 2 days ! I genuinely forgot how good this album was and is defo the best album they have done in the last 13 years.

The production is better than anything they have released since without a doubt.

They should of stuck with this formula as it sold 7 million copies world wide, so what do they do ! go completely the other way and decide to go " pop" and its failed big-time

The last great rock album they did. You can actually hear guitar on this lol

Even the bonus tracks are better than anything released since.

What i would do for another record like this !

ezearis 06-03-2013 07:00 PM

I love Have A Nice Day, though I'd do some changes on the tracklist.

But with this I gotta disagree, the production on Lost Highway is way better than the one in Have A Nice Day, all I can hear on it is noise and Jon's voice. You might like HAND more, but LH has better production/mixing without a doubt.

I'm with you on this, all I can hear is noise.

Dont really know a lot about the production to be fair. But anything where you can hear the riffs of a guitar is good enough for me and i can certainly hear it, i love noise, for me its as good as it gets, but what do i know :p

Yeah, I dig the guitar sound on some of the songs of HAND :D

JoviForever 06-03-2013 08:26 PM

Dirty Little Secret is better than anything they have done since and it didn't even make the album!

steel_horse75 06-03-2013 08:47 PM

I think it's crap.
Hands a great song so too I wanna be loved. Then it gets crap.
Only saved by a few songs like I Am and Complicated and even they are average.
The two bonus songs are good though but Unbreakabke sounds a bit dated already.
DLS is a top tune though
For me their worst album

Ps that line that says god makes no mistakes makes me wanna puke. Worst line in any Jovi song. Makes cat in a tree on beautiful world seem like poetry.

Definetly my favorite post-2000 album. The tour was also the last time they put on such an energetic show (even though the "left" ballads kind of ruined it) and I think it had a lot to do with the album tracks being as upbeat as they are.

Dave 1986 06-03-2013 09:25 PM

I used to love this album back in 2005. At the time I thought it was a huge return to form. By that I meant in the sense that it seemed more "pure" compared to Crush and Bounce, more actual guitar solos and just felt that it "rocked" more. Now it pretty much bores me. I played it about 6 months ago and it does nothing for me.

The title track absolutely floored me on initial release. It had the now-typical "It's My Life" symptoms but it was much less processed than that and "Everyday" and had more of a classic-rock vibe to it. Back then I thought "THIS is the kind of lead single I wanna hear from this band today!" Now? Somehow now it's lost it's impact, and the shoddy compressed production does it no favours either.

I can see why the album often gets cited as their best post-2000 release as I suppose it is probably more consistent than the others, it's loaded with more rock songs and tones down on the ballads at bit.

Plus I thought the red smirk gimmic was ace!

Crushgen24/88 06-03-2013 09:41 PM

Novocaine, Have A Nice Day, and Last Cigarette are really great tracks, and Last Man Standing, I Am, and Story Of My Life are very good, but other half of the album is mediocre at best, and drags the whole thing down. It's nowhere near as good as Crush IMO. I do love the smirk though, to the point of having it tattooed. Wish they had done more with it.

Far from It! No BJ album in the 00's sold more than 5 million. Don't believe the hype. In the US it hardly sold a lil over 1 million. This is the biggest market. Where are the other 6 million from???

Their last good album though sadly.

True - The LH albums sounds so flat with no edges at all. Seems they wiped out everyhting that sounded a lil like hard rock. I f*** hate this album

No turds on HAND like She's a Mystery, Say It Isnt so, Thank YOu For Loving Me or Mystery train.

Spidey5150 06-04-2013 12:03 AM

Love this album. Probably my favorite post-2000 album.

Also, whether you want to trust wiki or not, it's cited as listing the worldwide sales at 7M, though not on the HAND album page.

TwinFan 06-04-2013 12:04 AM

This album is great, in my opinion. The title track, Last Man Standing, Who Says (yes, THAT song), Novocaine, I Want to be Loved, and Last Cigarette are all excellent songs. I Am, Bells of Freedom, and Story of My Life are all good, too. The other 3 are turds, but the 6 great songs make up for it. I really enjoy the production, and don't think it sounds like a horrible wall of noise. The production on all albums since has been dodgy. This was their last great album.

She's A Mystery is absolute drek, and TYFLM is only okay, but Mystery Train is outstanding, and Say It Isn't So is the best post-00 Bon Jovi song period. In fact, I'd put it in the Top 20 Jovi songs ever.

NicoRourke 06-04-2013 12:39 AM

I'm also revisiting the album since the last few days.
Loving a lot of songs from it. The title track, I Want To Be Loved, LMS, BOF, I Am, etc.
These Open Arms, DLS shouldn't be bonus tracks but album cuts.
'Nothing'. Should be on the album! Hope it gets a proper release down the road.
Only disapointing thing is the 'wall of sound' approach for production, with JBJ's voice clearly separated and dominant. So many guitars parts that shouldn't be burried.
Still. A good outing me thinks!

IML88 06-04-2013 01:26 AM

There are a couple of real gems, a number of great tracks and frankly the remainder are at worst average. Its the strongest post 00's album despite not having a really huge hit single and certainly my favourite from this era. I agree about "Nothing" - would really have added something to it.

ezearis 06-04-2013 02:08 AM

Everyone here seems to love Last Cigarette and Novocaine, I don't have any problems with the last one (though I'd rather not have it on the record), but I can't stand Last Cigarette! I can't even listen to it.

I don't that many people love them TBH. Seems to be more a minority thing, escpecially with Last Cigarette. Though i don't thik many people here hate it either, as much as they just ignore it. Personally, I think they're the two best songs on the album.

Novocaine is great! Last Cigarette is not so good, but "You always lose the girl in a Brian Wilson world" is a ****ing great line.

RonJovi 06-04-2013 12:34 PM

My fave post 2000 album and arguably number 2 or 3 overall. There is no song on it I can't listen to. Complicated is as close as it gets but as dumb as it is, I just switch off the brain and enjoy it.

The only song I skip sometimes is LMS. Not because I don't think it's good but because I love the original version and think they sorta ruined it.

Only unbearable for me is Unbreakable which makes me want to puke but it's a bonus track so doesn't count. Don't get the love for Dirty Little Secret either to be honest. Decent but not great in my view.

Haha fair enough.

It never ceases to amaze me that literally every track they record seems to get some love on this board. It's all about opinions though.

Spidey5150 06-04-2013 11:36 PM

The only song I hate on the album is Complicated. Even a song like Wildflower, which I want to dislike, I actually enjoy quite a bit. Bells Of Freedom eventually grew tiresome, but I remember really liking it originally. Also, while Welcome To Wherever You Are has taken a lot of flak from people, I love it. I wish they had released it as a single stateside following Who Says as I thought it had a real chance to gain some traction. I would have swapped Complicated out for Dirty Little Secret, but other than that, no changes.

MJB12 06-05-2013 08:57 AM

The title track is one of my all-time favorite Bon Jovi songs, if not #1. I also really enjoy the album as a whole, especially I Wanna Be Loved, Welcome to Wherever You Are, Who Says, LMS, Bells of Freedom (absolutely love it), and Novocaine. The rest of the songs are pretty good too, Wildflower and I Am are probably my least favorites of the bunch. And of course, the HAND logo is my favorite.

wolffex 06-09-2013 10:57 AM

I love the album, only song I end up skipping is Welcome to Wherever You Are, for some reason I can't get into that song. My fav 5 songs from the album:

Last Man Standing, I Am, Story Of My Life, Novocaine, Complicated

ezearis 06-09-2013 02:06 PM

I used to hate Complicated but these days I'm listening it all the time, it's a fun song.

Solid Sambora 06-10-2013 12:20 PM

'Unbreakable' is awful, really embarrassing. It's one track I thought would get more hate than it does.

HAND, I Want To Be Loved, Last Man Standing, Novocaine, Story Of My Life, Dirty Little Secret- half way to a truly fantastic album.

WSYCGH, Last Cigarette, I Am, Complicated- solid enough without being awesome.

Bells Of Freedom, Wildflower- two songs I really like, but I'm not sure of their placement together in middle if the album, and maybe Wildflower isn't suited to the album at all.

Welcome To Wherever You Are- boring, cheesy nonsense that really doesn't fit the album at all.

#becausewecan 06-10-2013 01:06 PM

Its with the times though, no one is selling as many records as they once did. The band are still selling records, yes not by the bucket load, but Lost highway sold about 4.5m, circle sold 3m, WAN will sell about 1.5m this year if that, just a shame

Tiggerbeast 06-10-2013 08:31 PM

Have A Nice Day is probably the album with the most gritty attitude. The band were angry with the US government and they borrowed from the nu punk music scene at the time. It was probably the heaviest they've ever gone. I certainly like it and the three bonus tracks were great! Dirty Little Secret - what a song! They should go back to doing heavier rock again instead of pop. The title track is awsome. I'm not so sure their other choices of singles were right though.

I don't mind Lost Highway or even The Circle. All of their albums are way above the awful What About Now album. The production on up to and including HAND was good. It's the last album where Jon's actually doesn't sound like his vocals have been electronically pitched.

Oh wow.

Very good album, though. The last one they did I truly enjoyed. The Circle wasn't bad, but it was low on energy. This one wasn't.

To me the rock songs of Bounce were heavier than the ones on HAND.

Really dont understand why Story of my Life isnt a regular in the live set, always goes down well imo when it is played.

I used to love that song back in 2005, I still like it. I think that most of Have A Nice Day sounds great live, don't know if they work or not with the crowd as I've only heard the tile track.
