My Proof Jon's Voice is Shot

No videos here.

I bought What About Now for my son because he loves it, especially Because We Can (what you going to do, the beatings stopped working months ago).

Anyway, he is a Bon Jovi fan at 7 and knows a pretty large amount of their albums. Listening to one of the songs on the new record (couldn't tell you which, I think it was Beautiful World) when he said to me,

"Why is Bon Jovi's voice broken?"

I said, "Who told you that, what do you mean"

He replied, "On Always and Blood on Blood he is all grrrr and arrrr (implying a gruff voice I guess) but now he is all heeeeee neeeeee (implying a terrible voice).....is it because he is old?"

So there it is, proof that Jon's voice has gone, from a 7-year old.

Your son understood EVERYTHING.

Your son already recognized something some fans don't get after listening to the band for 30 years :D Smart kid ;)

Im sure most of us accepted the fact that its shot years ago....I personally have learned to live with it........I blame doc mghee for shooting Jon up with steroids for the massive SWW and NJ tours, so he could make more millions out of the band whislt they were the talk of the town so to speak....and Jon must take some of the rap for working it so hard on SO many long tours.....TBH i dint think he sounded that bad on the IOW highlights.......

Yeah, and this was all done without Jon's consent, right?

Jon's got himself to blame, all this "Doc made us tour so much" is bullshit. Jon could've said stop, but he didn't. Instead, he pushed for more shows, but that's not the story everyone wants to hear. His vocals have been on a steady decline ever since that happened, but Doc's nowhere to be found anymore. Jon's problem is his lack of training whenever he's not on tour. He doesn't do warming up shows, instead he treats the first shows of a tour as a warming up. Still, he goes out playing for 2 hours straight when not having done such a thing in a good year. It's like trying to run a marathon when you've not gone out of the house for a year.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan

True. If he really doesn't do any training when they're not touring then that is pretty stupid indeed.

This is pure speculation, right? How could you know how much he trains off-tour? Besides, whenever he's writing and recording between tours he probably sings many hours a day. His vocal decline has to do with aging, smoking and songs that aren't in his comfortable range.

I would say at least some of what Supersonic says is right. No doubt what you said plays a part too though. He just hasn't taken care of it and does not do enough to get the most from it today. What I actually found surprising is that my son knew it on record, so no matter how they cover it away from the live setting, he still sounds bad.

I am saying this, the vocals on WAN are probably the laziest/worst I can remember on any "rock" record.

Maybe he considers those "one off" shows he does on his own, as keeping his voice in training. I've always thought he sounded nasal-y, it's just gotten more pronounced over the years.

Rdkopper 06-25-2013 07:29 AM

Cute story but Jon's voice isn't bad at all on Beautiful World, which is one of the reasons why I like that song. Even his "Oh O" sounds good at the end.

It was probably Amen. Jon should have given that one to someone who could have sang it right.
