99 in the Shade
I rarely see any discussion on this great track. It's a perfect summer song, in my opinion. It also seems like it'd be a great rocker live, a party song in the same vein as Sleep in a way. Good guitar work, also. The lyrics aren't brilliant, but it's a fun song to rock out to. Just another part of a nearly perfect album. I think it's one of their more radio-friendly songs from that era, but most of them were for that time.
Any other fans of this great little song? |
Don't know how "summer songs" were back then, but now they are simple, silly and happy, like Summertime of Lost Highway; also, I really can't understand the relationship "party" with "rock", really, I can't imagine myself deleting the electronic music playlist and playing Bon Jovi in a party :P
Speaking of the song, I used to like it a lot, now not so much. Is a nice song, but far from one of their bests. It get's a Yay! from me. |
I've always thought it would be great live.

Great track from a perfect album. Is it the deepest/smartest thing in the world? No, but something doesn't have to be that to be great.

I don't really like it. One of the weaker tracks from the 80s records, and should have been replaced with some good demo.
|
It made me laugh when I first heard it and still makes me smile. It was different. A good summer song.

One of Bon Jovi's best.

The only songs on New Jersey that I don't (really) like are Born to Be My Baby and 99 in the Shade. Otherwise - the album is a solid hard rock record with touches of blues and R&B. Those two songs are just a 'little' too poppy for me and I would have rather seen them replaced with some of the demos.
Having said that, I don't mind 99 in the Shade too much. It's almost like Get Ready v.2 and I think it would work well live. Overall, I am happy it's the last track on New Jersey. Edit: It's the second last....almost forgot about Love For Sale there....my favourite song on that record :D |
It's not a bad song, but not one of my favorites. Get Ready is pretty awful IMO, but I can see the comparision. But I'd always had the impression that New Jersey was tailored to be Slippery #2, and in that case, 99 In The Shade loses against its brother Wild In The Streets.
Really like Born To Be My Baby, though. No shit it's poppy - that's the Prayer follow-up. Just look at the lyrics, and it also was the second single. |
I am in Las Vegas right now and it is 118 here - this song is in my head LOL
