Question For Drummers

I think this Richie kid did a pretty decent job filling in for Tico. I'm sure some stuff is basic but he seemed right on the money. I know nothing about the drums and I even noticed a few small differences during certain parts of certain songs. aka The "Always" solo. But overall, I think he was pretty decent. I even forgot he was there during certain parts.

My question to drummers.... How did he do? And how difficult are Tico's parts? How did he learn all that so fast?

I only watched bits of the stream but he was okay for most of it. He played the beat before the KTF guitar solo on the hi hat when it's supposed to be on the tom and he played Lost Highway faster than he should have done. An experienced drummer would have no difficulty with Most of Tico's Bon Jovi work except for maybe Damned or Home bound Train which contain some tricky triplets. He must have been holed up with the band for a few days practising because he seemed to know what he was doing for the most part and he may even have had sheet music next to him at the show.

Agree with the stick man. Tico's drum work isn't hard to do but at the same time there's no doubt he is good. Like he says, he plays what's needed for the song.

I think what Rich lacked was how hard Tico hits the snare. I think he did a commendable job but it missed that punch.

He was generally good, but he changed some crashes, the snare had different sound and he used the hi-hat in other ways than Tico. For example, the IML was not so powerful because he played the whole song like Tico plays the very last chorus.

I think Phill X made a better fill than Rich did in drums.

He wasn't bad, and having played for Jon, I honestly didn't expect him to be. But he just wasn't Tico. Like Richie's guitar and vocals, Tico's instrumental "voice" adds a distinct personality to the band.

The same thing happened when I first listened to Richie's second solo album. Though I considered it a fine improvement over his first one, something about it wasn't quite right. So I started playing Stranger In This Town, and had my answer within minutes -- Tico had played on Stranger, Kenny Aronoff on Undiscovered Soul!

I'm fairly sure Destination Anywhere and Undiscovered Soul both had Kenny Aronoff! Fun fact.

Blaze of Glory too.

This new guy versus Tico in his prime would be no contest but Tico has lost quite a lot of his power and fluidity so the difference isn't too damaging to the overall sound of the current band which has become more and more diluted as the years have passed.
