:? okay, here's an article about it:
Since its founding in 1951, the Berlin International Film Festival has numbered alongside Cannes and Venice among the leading film festivals of the world. In the heart of Berlin, capital and cultural meeting-point, the Berlinale offers a platform for the promotion of the art and industry of cinema. Its intention is to support a better cooperation and understanding between cultures from around the world by presenting innovative works of merit. Numerous directors and actors that are today part of film history were "discovered" at the festival. The Berlinale has been increasing the attendance with its multifaceted programme and the various international Stars until today. In the sections Competition, Panorama, Kinderfilmfest, Forum, Perspektive Deutsches Kino and German Cinema, the different genres of cinema are presented. Film historical Retrospectives and Homages enhance the programme of the festival. The European Film Market is an infrastructure affiliated to the festival which provides, aside from logistics, a framework for sales and trade for the film industry. The awarding of the Golden and Silver Bears by the International Jury marks the end of each Berlinale. In 2002 the Japanese animated film Sen to chihiro no kamikakushi and the Irish film Bloody Sunday won ex aequo the Golden Bear. The 53rd Berlin International Film Festival will be held from February 6 - 16, 2003. |
