This release is... pretty damn bland. Together On The Outside sounds like Swedish mid 2000s pop/rock (think The Rasmus, Vanilla Ninja) and could be fun if there was a constant crunchy eigth note guitar rhythm, but alas, there isn't. That's Alice Cooper doing the spoken word part, right?
NONE of these have a huge hook, they all sound rather casual, which would be fine if there was more energy, groove, swagger, urgency, whatever to it. But the production is rather anemic. What the hell is it with that "modern" sound? For one, it sounds about as modern as Bounce did, and also, it doesn't really fit. Richie's at his best when it sounds stripped down and gutsy, and the wobbling bass gets in the way of that big time. Expected a LOT more from I Don't Want To... especially, the way it is, the hook is neither huge nor does it manage to get that winking rawness across. Making History again has Orianthi in Pink mode in the chorus. Those guitar solos kinda have an Aerosmith-vibe to them, but not vintage era Aerosmith, but rather Just Push Play. Which also had horrible "modern" production that got into the way of the melodies. Hard to believe two seasoned veterans felt this was a good fit, and that a woman in her early 30s would think that this sounds contemporary. Although I guess We Are Magic has a sound to it that's actually modern... and it's not for the better. Talk box guitar instead of a sax hook - Carly Rae Jepsen is much better at this type of music, and hers even sounds more 80s than Richie's has in decades. Also, the verses of One Night Of Piece star off like that lost Bounce demo - It Only Takes One To Say Goodbye. But that track sounds BY FAR the most like the Richie I'd have expected. Could have done w/o the children's choir, though. |
