Bon Jovi Number 1 in Rock Rich List....Again!

Quote:

Bon Jovi have once again topped Billboard’s rock rich list of annual earnings, raking in an estimated total of $29,436,801 in 2013.

The band have topped the cash chart for three of the previous six years, and have never been far from the summit. Their return to the head of the list comes despite the absence of guitarist Richie Sambora following a dispute with frontman Jon Bon Jovi.

Billboard, who compile their chart based on available figures from US music and ticket sales, say: “It’s no surprise Bon Jovi’s immensely popular stable of songs continues to drive strong digital track sales, with more than 1.5m downloads producing nearly $300,000 in royalties. Streaming royalties are also catching up, approaching $150,000.

“But this is a touring band – road-warrior revenue streams include robust merch sales, likely in the eight-figure range. Fans have spent an estimated $2m per year in online merch purchases.”

Pop star Taylor Swift was overall best earner last year, bringing in $39.7m. She was followed by Kenny Chesney ($33m) and Justin Timberlake ($31.5m).

Further down the top 40, the Rolling Stones netted $26.2m and Fleetwood Mac pulled in $19.1m.

Billboard’s rock rich list 2013

1 (4). Bon Jovi: $29.4m
2 (5). Rolling Stones: $26.2m
3 (10). Fleetwood Mac: $19.1m
4 (19). Dave Matthews Band: $13.9m
5 (21). Paul McCartney: $13.8m
6 (22). Eagles: $13m
7 (24). Trans-Siberian Orchestra: $12.5m
8 (31). Imagine Dragons: $9.4m
9 (35). Rush: $9.1m
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Wow!!!!! Rock is truely dead. That is one sad list.

I don't think the list is sad as you do but I guess what is sad about is - where's the up and coming bands on that list?

I think it shows how much music has changed. I don't think bands these days have longevity or a solid fan base. They are all 5 minutes flash in the pans.

bands like the muse, foo fighters, arctic monkeys, black keys, coldplay and many more are successful, play arenas and big festivals, sell records and have huge media coverage. its just that dinosaurs like metallica-stones-bj-u2-acdc-maiden and aerosmith still pass genres and people still pay to see them live. i believe there are many good bands outthere

Promoters have been saying for years that once the big attendance touring bands actually quite touring there will be no one to replace them. So, that's why promoters are paying these older bands the big minimums to tour so they can reap the cash rewards for a few more years.

Jon will be sporting an erection over this accomplishment for a few weeks I'd say. Who needs awards for making good music when you can be the best at making lots of money? This calls for another vastly over priced tour :)

That's such a narrow view though. Just look at the festival circuit. I mean, currently, there's about 10 times more festivals than there were 10 years ago. None of the bands that play festival circuits make the riches list (I am surprised though someone like Iron Maiden isn't on that list for example. Must be a completely US biased list) - yet promoters still reap the cash from them.

Once the big bands are gone, festivals will become the norm. And that trend is very much visible already.

No he won't....

First off, these numbers are bullshit and not accurate. He probably has more accurate figures and knew them way before this shitty little article came out. Secondly, he's not number 1 overall, he's number 4 so there is nothing to brag about. Third, Jon never ever talks about money. He might brag about a lot of things, number 1 tours and albums, but never about his finances. Forth, If anything, Jon would be pissed at such an article for exposing his finance and most likely, inaccurately.

Mainstream rock is totally dead. If you go back and view how bands once ruled the airwaves in the 70's 80's 90's and part of the 00's, you'd realize that the only modern band on this list being, Imagine Dragons, raking at number 8 on the rock chart but number 31 overall completely sucks.

I'm a part time sub in a High School and I could assure you that they don't listen to rock of any kind. It's all Rap, Rave, and Electro type tunes. I tell them that their music sucks all the time and they just don't care. It's not the art and life movement that it once was. I made them all watch the Living On The Prayer video the other day on their phones. They said "cool" and went back to their shitty music.

The stadium sellers of the future will be Jay Z, Kayne West, Justin Timberlake, maybe Beyoncé, etc.

And as far as the festival circuit goes, you have 10 bands all playing for a 30 dollar admission. How are they supposed to make real money? They might make a few hundred thousand but not the millions you see on these charts.

Oh I 100% agree with you, that festivals will be the way of touring in the future. Honestly, for the consumer it's the better deal. The merchandise sales have also been a large part of the touring revenue which I would think would still be somewhat sustained with festivals.
