Edge Of A Broken Heart release by a band called Briar ???

http://www.shotguncharlie.co.uk/briar.htm

"A new record deal with PRT was signed and a new single put out "Edge of a broken heart" was the bands first hit, No 1 in the national rock charts, ahead of the likes of Def Leppard & Whitesnake, the song eventually reached only lower reaches of top 50 in the national singles chart, owing to Gallup (chart organiser) banning it because Jonathan King had plugged it 2 weeks running in his "The Sun" national newspaper column."

Couldn't find anything related, does anybody know if this is true?

Yeah, I did find a recording of it, but had never heard of the band or, more important, that the song was published by them. Is that a mere cover or was it perhaps "given" to them like Does Anybody Really or Nothing were to other artists?

Briar was a real band and they did record the song. Songs don't need to be "given" to anyone, if the writers put it out into the publishing circles, anyone can pick a song and record it. So, unless someone from Briar talks about it, we'll never know why they chose to record it. The video seems like a joke, so maybe it was just a funny single. It also doesn't seem to be on any of their albums available on iTunes.
