It's a no win situation. He does look old but then again I don't want him to be Richie with his scraggly, dyed hair, shirt open to the navel, making suggestive comments to the audience, grabbing his crotch, etc. I guess Jon needs to figure out how to be a rockstar without looking or acting the part. I'm not discounting that he might be able to do it.
For years he idolized Frank Sinatra and I think he was hoping for the same trajectory of a career: occasional movies, powerful political friends, loyal & adoring fans, living his life and his work "his way" -- and to some extent he has succeeded. However, he doesn't have the respect that Sinatra (or Springsteen or Bono or the RollingStones) have had and I am not sure he and the revised Bon Jovi have the pulling power to really fill those arenas and stadiums or headline major festivals anymore. Bon Jovi isn't gaining new fans and I am not sure if the old fans haven't just seen enough already and if they are willing to buy those expensive tickets, book flights and hotels, etc. to see them. As much as I am shocked at his sold out Runaway Tour stops, are they indicative of his wider fan base? I've seen Bon Jovi in person and online many times; Jon has no new moves to offer and hearing a couple of new songs just isn't a lure. The absence of the comradery with Richie whether or not it was real is huge.
I think Phil X is fine but he has a terrible voice; I am surprised in the months and years that have followed that Jon hasn't found someone who can support him better vocally. Note: Phil X is near Jon in age (50) but still comes across as a rockstar much more than Jon. Sitting in a concert worrying about Jon's voice or having the production drown out his voice isn't a good time. Having him constantly telling the audience to stand up just reminds us all that the the high energy shows are a thing of the past.
