One of the interviews/articles during the mini-tour like all said going back to roots But it also added that they were recording as a band. Unlike the last few where everyone recorded parts. John said he was fetching David & Tico coffee.

No mention of PhilX - I wonder if not everything is finished and he'll go in and do parts or meet them to finish up. Shanks could record again. Think we all know who it won't be.

Also sounds like from the articles, even though most are poor press, that Bobby may be gone and Matt in for him. I had wondered if it was this or just the last run.

I noticed Hugh seemed even more in the background this last trip, I wonder if he is going to be staying for the next round. Pictures at hotels with fans often had Matt and PhilX (not official meet & greets) but saw nothing with Hugh and nothing on social media from him or his wife. What are people on the board thinking or am I just over reacting?

I saw quite a few fan pictures with Hugh, I even posted some on this board.
Hugh has a Tweeter account but never posts. His wife mostly posts about her son's budding career or Jake uses his mother's account for the same purpose. The last time she tweeted about BJ it turned into chaos until she decided to forbid public access to her tweets for a while, so I guess that she won't mention BJ ever again to avoid a repeat of this situation.

I've read reports of the interview you're referring to but not heard it:

He didn't say 'die hard' and he didn't say 'keyboardist David Bryan...', that seems to be the interpretation of the reporter rather than anything else and to believe they're recording 'as a band' without Hugh or some other bassist is silly so I'd be inclined to not read anything into that whatsoever except for from what Jon has said about not really caring about BB and it being a quick recording of old songs I'd guess it was SSII rather than Avatar with everyone just laying down their parts as and when, which would make sense for Shanks to just fill in the missing parts as he did. Still doesn't tell us whether Phil, Shanks or some other guitarist was playing lead for THINFS though.

One positive from some more recording, HAND and LH had similar issues iirc about new songs needing to be recorded after the record was declared done and Shanks was not available, I forget who filled in tracks on HAND but Dan Huff filled in tracks on LH and did a good job, at least it might give us some more interesting, less in your face pop production if that's the case.
