'Friends' is actually an outtake from the Bounce album. Jon opted instead to go with the spin-off song 'Joey'. Not as good.

Sure, fair but he's dumbing the songs down into bumper sticker anthems and making them as non personal as possible. It's that reason I don't agree that The Circle was a political album. It might have been inspired by political events but wanting to inspire change doesn't have to be in reference to a specific party. I need more than "Get up" "try harder" and "you got this". Someday I'll be Saturday Night and the recent go get'em songs are about the same thing, it's all about how you package them.

Unfortunately, if you're like me and you read/listen/watch the press, then you KNOW what the songs are actually about so it ruins the "generic" message. So if you know that, for instance, "Happy Now" is specifically about Obama winning the election, then it's very much a political song, it's very direct and pointed and political. And when you know the stories behind several of the other songs, they're not so generic and dumbed down and you think, "If I wanted the 6:00 news, I'd turn on the TV."
I don't want Jon to dumb down enough to write Bad Name at 50+ either, but listen to a song like Fingerprints--very sexy and sensual and age appropriate. He couldn't have written that when he was 25 and it wouldn't have appealed to a 13 year old audience anyway. He should write along those lines.
Also, can I just say that I think that line about writing inspired by the newspaper really was a throw away line. I think people are reading WAY too much into it. I sure hope so, at least.
