I can actually imagine that happening. They opened for them in 2006. After that the band, especially Jon, went all country for Lost Highway. Around that period of time he stated a few times how he was listening to country artists etc.
Then they decided to put out a "big anthemic rock album" next. Told that story over and over prior to its release. I get the feeling that they were a bit out of touch of what was going on in the current "rock scene". They might've thought about Nickelback, said "ah they had some decent tunes" and grabbed their album. Next thing you knew - they were writing "Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning" over that melody.
What's also interesting is that the bridge of this song was basically re-used in "What About Now".
