If jon wants to write a song about a record label/industry he need look no further than chainsaw Charlie by WASP.

Shit...that's not even something I considered but it's not terribly far fetched of a theory that this album had to take the place of the next album if it expired 2015.

mike1990 08-13-2015 06:23 PM

I'm thinking Burning Bridges is about the label. Hence the part where it says like maybe you can sing or even strum along. Even Richie can do that, the bigwigs at the label probably can't. They order bands to write these songs and do this and that, but yet they probably can't sing or play guitar.

My dos centavos on that.

That would make complete sense. As in 'I still gotta give you one more album, but screw you... youre not getting the official album, you can have this bunch of leftovers instead'. Then topping it all off with Burning Bridges at the end.

Would explain why Jon isn't thrilled with the album and isn't excited about it.

That theory makes me like this song even more. I love the lyrics.

YES. Matt's tweet about how everything happens for a reason, Jon adding a song last minute. The album sales have been weak, if the label isn't getting any of the touring and merch revenue then yeah I could this being the case.

steel_horse75 08-13-2015 06:34 PM

I doubt they were dropped. Whats probably happened is the contract has expired and the label has chosen to not renew it. The days of BJ selling 10m copies per album has long gone.

Bon Jovi dont make them money anymore

i remember reading around the time of Hand I think it was that they didnt expect to be with their label for much longer due to how the industry was changing (and that was 2005!) and they would go down the Indie route

Just listened to the previews, really liked Life Is Beautiful, We All Fall Down, and Burning Bridges. I was surprised about the last one as I hated the 30 seconds snippet and with 1:30 sounds way better. Considering the lyrics, I think too that it's for the label. We'll have to see under which one the next album is released.

Yep! And no proper album cover, no lyric booklet... Basically giving the label the shittest release possible while fulfilling contract obligations but still releasing decent music/keeping their dignity.

+1. Even a big money maker such as Springsteen had to sign a not-so-juicy contract renewal a couple of years ago (cf Wikileaks).

Rdkopper 08-13-2015 06:41 PM

I just made an edit of Burning Bridges. I looped a few verses and repeated the chorus. Nothing crazy because we'll have the album by next week or maybe even sooner but just something to enjoy! It's now 3:15

How do I share this?

No kidding! I come to check-in, hear a desperate cry for help from Savvi, race off to my computer to save the day with my trusty headphones and come back to find 183 versions of lyrics posted!!! WTH?? It takes time to Google foreign words, ppl!! :)

I haven't checked them against the others word for word but I think they're close.

Burning Bridges (From the previous sample and this new one):

… friends in hell (I assume is the end of the chorus…)

Someone shut the lights off, turn the page.
The stories I could write.
I’ve seen a million faces and I’ve lived a couple lives
Here’s our history for all to see
The smiles and all the scars
First the rising and the falling
Call this chapter "Shooting Stars".
(Must sound good from where you are!)

Sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, farewell,
Adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Here’s one last one you can sell.
Let’s call it “Burning Bridges”
It’s a singalong as well
Ciao, adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Play it for your friends in hell.

Ah, check the box, yeah, mark this day.
There’s nothing more to say.
After 30 years of loyalty, they let you dig a grave.
Now, maybe you could learn to sing or even strum along
I’ll give you half the publishing
You’re why I wrote this song
(Everybody, sing along!)

Sayonara, adios, auf wiedersehen, farewell,
Adieu, goodnight, guten abend
Here’s one last one you can sell.
Let’s call it “Burning Bridges”
It’s a singalong as well
Hope my money and my (mad… or mat…)

I really like Burning Bridges. That right there should tell anyone who's paying attention that I don't think it's a dig at He Who Shall Remain Nameless. :)

While both the 30 years and half the publishing could obviously be directed at either Richie or the label, the tongue-in-cheek FU vibe reminds me a lot of The More Things Change which was clearly a snipe at the industry, if not specifically the label. And someone asked if the sing and strum along is a dig at Richie and all I can say if it is, it's a really bad one because even on his worst day Richie out-"strums" Jon and, as far as I'm concerned, he can out-sing him any day of the week as well. (Repeat, in case someone missed it, that's MY very subjective and highly biased opinion!) Also, IIRC, Richie didn't have anything to do with this one so he wouldn't get any of the publishing nor would it be "one more [he] could sell."

So my vote goes to the record label as the target for BB.

That I know. But it says "I'll give you half the publishing", which is why I attributed that line to the song BB itself. Also... SNSM has three writers - I doubt Richie gets more than Jon does ("half the publishing").

Faceman 08-13-2015 06:46 PM

Burning Bridges is awesome! :D:D:D
At first I thought it's against Richie as well. But a dig at the record company makes more sense.
- Jon's quote, that this album is only to fullfill commitments
- his quote that it ends a cycle
- his very limited enthusiasm about this album
- the whole metaphor of "Burning Bridges"
- the line from We Don't Run "I ain't afraid of burning bridges [...] like a Phoenix from the ashes",
- and the line in this songs about one more song to sell

It's just shouting out that he's sick of the record label.
But what makes me wonder...why the hell would a record company agree to put such a song on the album?

ezearis 08-13-2015 06:47 PM

Am I the only one that hears Tico's backing vocals on Burning Bridges? Or am I on drugs or something?

Can't stop listening to the snippet!

A serious question: if all this speculation (about album title being a dig at the label) is true, what do you think is the reason that's Jon unhappy with it?

He always brags how he's been there his whole career and I always felt for someone like him it always makes sense to stay under that big umbrella, where they throw him a bunch of cash to record an album and then some more to do a bit of promoting (enough to land the no. 1 Billboard sales), but no real expectations for hit singles (I would assume at least).

I personally never saw Jon as some hipster experimental artist who would be willing to fund the recording with his own money to make an independent album that would be more 'artistic' than one under a major label.

Rdkopper 08-13-2015 07:42 PM

It comes down to sales. They land at number 1 but drop to 89 by the second week...

They probably didn't renew his contract and said, 'oh bty you owe us one more'

I think it's comical that they approved the song Burning Bridges.

Jon's a pain in the ass too. He doesn't want to do Greatest Hits and does shitty albums like WAN instead...

This might be the kick in the ass that Jon needs. Apparently it's working.

The business has changed enormously, now the tours are the big business. Jon can attract other labels, that's for sure.

We Fall Down
Shattered dreams, stand up and be proud
I'm telling you now, yeah

Chorus
Climb Every Mountain,
How high doesn't matter,
Don't ever be afraid to fall,
Walk out on that wire,
Climb every ladder,
Keep your back against the wall,
And don't be scared to hit the ground,
Cos we all (all), fall (fall), down,

Down on your luck, you're feeling small
The little things seem 10 feet tall,
Watch your dreams fall apart at the seams,
You wanna scream and shout out loud,
When you sit up they knock you down,
You're a long way from home, aha
But you're never alone, yeah

Chorus
Climb Every Mountain,
How high doesn't matter,
Don't ever be afraid to fall,
Walk out on that wire,
Climb every ladder,
Keep your back against the wall,
And don't be scared to hit the ground,
Cos we all (all), fall (fall),

Who Would You Die For
For just one look I'd crawl across the floor,
Who would you die for?
Who would you die for?

You right me lipstick letters,
And miss me when I'm gone,
Wake up tangled in the sheets,
Still aching for my arms,
The way you move it's almost holy,
I'm hoping you don't know you're only,
All I want is all of you and more,
The big bad wolf is knockin at your door,

Chorus
Who would you die for?
Who would you die for?
I wanna know, your secrets and your sins,
I wanna feel, your breathing out and in
I wanna know, I wanna know
Who would you die for?
Who would you die for?

Guitar solo

I wanna know what makes you feel,
I wanna know love truly heals,
I wanna know what makes you feel...

Fingerprints
I gave you my fringerprints,
Now just like you they're gone,
A man invisible,
I'll be him from now on,

Chorus
The last time that I saw them,
They were running through your hair,
You held war between your lips and brought another there,
The last time that I saw them,
I haven't seen them since,
No matter who or what I touch, I leave no evidence
I gave you my fingerprints,

I said I'd give you every thing,
But who'd thought you'd take it all,
Does a promise really break,
If nobody sees it fall,
A heartbreak can't wash away,
The taste of your memory,
Don't know what I would do,
If you should stop haunting me,

Chorus
The last time that I saw them,
They were running through your hair,

Life Is Beautiful
You've got all the answers,
but the answers are all wrong

Chorus
I can't save you from my sins,
Innocence my long lost friend
No wind, no rain can wash away,
These hallow words my mouth won't pray,
You fly, you fall,
Life is beautiful,

She's there to lift me up but I only let her down,
A guilty king wears a broken crown,
She's sweet forgiveness in a lonesome lost and found,

Chorus
I can't save you from my sins,
Innocence my long lost friend
No wind, no rain can wash away,
These hallow words my mouth won't pray,
You fly, you fall,
Life is beautiful,

I said the contrary a few days ago. Nowadays the only way for a label to make big bucks with an aging band is with their back catalog. But the BJ catalog is nowhere near the Beatles one for example (remember the big battle between Michael Jackson and Macca many years ago, shortly after their bromance song "Ebony & Ivory"?) so I can't imagine Warner or Sony offering a juicy contract to Jon... It has to be a smaller label.

TheseDays23 08-13-2015 08:23 PM
