Also, holy crap, does Miss Fourth Of July's melody sound a lot like Right Side Of Wrong's AND Captain Crash's.

The listening party Sex Sells tracks are so much better from the listening party.

There is a huge difference between the way Jon sang and made music post and pro the year 2000.

There are some band songs I can swear I hear Bobby on (I'm not talking about songs that originally had him). There's a palm muted guitar part in the bridge of Radio Saved My Life.....that sounds like him.

Not sure you mean about the SS listening party songs in regards to the box set though, the only listening party song that made the box set was Rich Man....and that was still solo but a totally different take.

Been listening to 100,000,000 fans quite abit recently, and I've been splitting the tracks up into specific eras, but have a few queries....the dates come from the list that Obi posted years ago. Would appreciate any thoughts on these.

1985:
We Rule The Night
- Would this make it a 7800 demo do we think, or could it be a late 1985 Demo for Slippery?

1986:
Out Of Bounds
Edge Of A Broken Heart
- Obviously Slippery outtakes

1991:
If I Can't Have Your Love
- Listed as a Stranger In This Town outtake and I know that the track was demoed in a full electric version for that album, but this Piano version doesn't seem to be in a style that matches the Stranger sessions. And Richie's voice also sounds older to me. I think that this might have been recorded specifically for the box set in the same way that David recorded Memphis. Thoughts?

1992:
The Radio Save My Life Tonight
Taking It Back
Miss Fourth Of July
Starting All Over Again
Every Beat Of My Heart
Outlaws Of Love
Sympathy
Love Ain't Nothing But A Four Letter Word
Billy
- All obviously Keep The Faith demos (I know there is speculation that Outlaws is older...)

1993:
Gotta Have A Reason
- This is the only track from 1993. I presume that they weren't yet writing for the next album...so what was this for? Just something they came up with one day?

1994/1995:
Always (Demo)
Someday I'll Be Saturday Night (Demo)
Why Aren't You Dead?
Open All Night
I Just Want To Be Your Man
The Fire Inside
Good Guys Don't Always Wear White
Only In My Dreams
Lonely at The Top
Flesh & Bone
Letter To A Friend
Nobody's Hero
- This stuff would be a combination of Cross Road and These Days sessions, along with some soundtrack stuff. Does anyone know if any of this stuff was specifically worked on for Cross Road (as alternatives to Always, Someday) or if they were specifically worked on for These Days. I know Good Guys was for The Cowboy Way.

1996:
I Get A Rush
Someday Might Just Be Tonight
River Runs Dry
- I presume that these were Destination Anywhere demos? Or was there a period when another BJ record was planned after These Days?

1997:
Shut Up And Kiss Me
All I Wanna Do It You
- These two are odd to me, as they were recorded when Jon was in full Destination Anywhere mode, but both are co-written with Richie. Were these early writting sessions for the next band album? Band or solo demos?

1998:
These Arms Are Open All Night
Last Chance Train
Rich Man Living In A Poor Man's House
Crazy Love
- Demos for the follow up to Destination Anywhere, which eventually became a band album?

1999:
Garageland
Maybe Someday
The One That Got Away
You Can Sleep While I Dream
Satellite
Real Life
Too Much Of A Good Thing
Kidnap An Angel
Ordinary People
Tempation
- So these would be Sex Sells demos, which eventually became Crush? Does anyone know which of these feature the band and which are JBJ demos? I know Real Life was for EDTV and The One That Got Away was also meant for a movie.

2002:
Breathe
- We know this was for Bounce

2003:
Thief Of Hearts
Last Man Standing
Memphis Lives In Me
- This Left Feels Right, with Memphis being done specificlaly for the Box Set.

Appreciate anyone's thoughts on the above.

So after KTF, Jon was going to do another band album called Open All Night... It got scrapped for Cross Roads.... If you include Always and Saturday Night plus a few tracks written for movies, you can fill the rest with the Open All Night tracks and make a short album from that period.

The Box Set is mainly three things.

Rejected Songs From:
1. KTF's Double Album

2. Sex Sells

3. Open All Night

They really didn't go into the vault and restore old demos like the way a true box set should be... If they had to complete a song, I'd be more forgiving but to remake 3/4th the album, is disappointing.

I'm sure the record company had something to do with that decision.

Interesting, what do you think was specifically remade for the box set? Apart from the instrumentation that we saw Bobby and Jon adding in the videos, I'm curious what you think was re-done.

Thinny 05-03-2020 04:34 PM

I vagely remember Jon talking about an album called Open All Night back then. There was also talk of calling an album Free Beer too, but that may have been a joke ;) "Free Beer at Tower Records" etc...

I'm suprised that Jon didn't re-do the vocals for Radio Saved My Life as the fact that he has a cold is very obvious.

I think anything pre-1997 had Jon tried to re-do vocally would be as obvious as all hell if a song is credited to 1991 with vocals from 2004. I think touchups were done here and there, additional instrumentation was added to the songs Jon did solo but I really don't think too much was re-recorded especially given the state of Jon's voice. 2003/2004 wasn't a particularly strong period for him vocal-wise.

yeah good point!

Did you guys all forget about him in fact re-doing Starting All Over Again for the box set? (And it sounded dreadful IMO)

From what I recall, they used a different take/the guide vocal for that version, that wasn't re-recorded in 2004. There's a VERY good reason when they did Why Aren't You Dead live at the Borgata show they skipped the key change after the bridge.

EDIT: http://bonjovi2005.free.fr/comm_box.php Jon's notes. He lists Why Aren't You Dead as for KTF, Obie's notes say 1994 and Jon says for Crush in the DVD Commentaries so take that for what you will but there are some good notes here.

"So Outlaws I think was a precursor to things like Wanted Dead or Alive and Stick To Your Guns" Because he barely remembers Outlaws of Love to me that puts it between 7800 and Slippery but the chorus is so Desmond Childy I can't really tell

He didn't re-do it. The vocals for Starting All Over Again are off the guide vocal of the original demo. They're pretty much one take but give a much better indication as to what Jon was capable off in 1992 than the polished vocals on the final version.

Salaam Aleikum,
Sebastiaan
