He does. Maybe not in attitude, but in the output.

The music he makes, for the most part, sounds what was in the radio around 2007, not 2020. While he may still chase "relevance" in his own head, his sound got stuck somewhere around mid-to-late 2000s. He's still doing his own version of Kings of Leon and The Killers (neither of whom have had a hit in years), rather than Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots.

The only times recently where I felt they actually sounded somewhat current were We Don't Run and Born Again Tomorrow, but they never went full force with these as singles.

I thought that was just PR speak for "it sounded like a ripoff of another song".

Now I had to listen to Imagine Dragons and Twenty One Pilots, so I finally can put some music to the names. But it left me wondering what of the music of these bands Jon should try to implement, because when I listen to them I feel like in comparison BJ is still heavily into rock music.

On the other hand, I agree that we get variations of the same things. But this is something that has been happening since the very beginning.

Walls leans very heavily into Imagine Dragon's Thunder.

I stand corrected. Walls is so awful that I completely forgot about it, but it does sound very much like Imagine Dragons. If that's Jon's best attempt at sounding current, I guess I should hope he never tries again.

Since we're on the subject, another song that I felt could have achieved some minor success if given a chance is With These Two Hands. It got rightfully called out for being very similar to "Domino" by Jessie J (which was a hit), but more generally it very much sounds like one of those Max Martin songs he was writing for Katy Perry, P!nk, Carly Rae Jepsen, etc. that dominated charts in the early 2010s. 2013 might have been already a bit late for it, but if placed on Greatest Hits, I'm positive it would have done better than What Do You Got; not a terrible song, but awful as a lead single.

Imo, limitless is just walls and we dont run (musically) put together, with less edge. I think the likes of walls and thinfs maybe the closest things we get to "anthems" these days. I'm not mad about that, I do like Walls and I listened to thinfs lots when the single was released. Beautiful Drug sounds like thinfs to me, with a weird up and down vocal melody.
