Chances are that anything recorded between 83-2014/15 or whenever that deal came to an end is owned by Universal, so they can't just give that away for free. THINFS and 2020 era are licencing deals and therefore they have only licenced the tracks released to Universal, so they retain the rights to anything else.

It's also more difficult as anything featuring Alec or Richie could possibly need their permission. Def Leppard can do it much more easily because the line up hasn't changed for almost 30 years...

If anything it might be JBJ fan club shows at best, in my opinion.

Oh that's super interesting. So if Jon records a demo at home (pre 2014) and does nothing with it that's technically owned by Universal?

That was my question. How can they even prove that?

It depends on the contract, but back then it was not uncommon for bands to sign away the rights everything that was recorded during the period that they were under contract.

As RD says, they'd still need to prove it was recorded in the period, but as Jon still has a working relationship with the label, I doubt he'd want to risk upsetting them.

This is such a missed opportunity. Since ownership is changing hands and they're rebranding anyway, this would've been an ideal time to put some substance behind Jon's hype about the whole "renewed band spirit" that he's been trying to sell since THINFS came out. IF they had placed more focus on the band as a separate entity from Jon - starting with the name.

The website could've been reformatted to make the band and band news the central focus. It would be so cool to see subsections for each of the band members, with bios and updates on activities that each is involved with outside of the band, like Jon's solo projects, Runaway Tours, David's plays, The Drills, Tico's artwork, Shanks and Everett's outside activities, etc. If it were truly a fan club for the band, they might offer early access and maybe even a nominal discount for tickets and merch associated with their independent projects. Jon's always boasted about how he encourages the band to get involved in outside work while they're on hiatus because it makes them a stronger unit when they get back together. This would have been a great platform to do more than pay lip service to the idea that they're a band who supports one another.

It's no secret that I haven't put much stock in Jon's yammering about them being a "real band" and "tighter than ever" and how grateful he is for the way everybody "stepped up" after Richie left. Something like this could've gone a long way towards changing my mind, or even proving to me that I was wrong; but instead it seems like the "something big" is just another shrine to Jon and a marketplace for merch.

If I still had any lingering doubts about it, this pretty much just swept them away. I think it's safe to say that Bon Jovi, as a band, has left the building.

Totally agree @jackieblue

I’ve never understood why it was called backstage with Jbj in first place.
Now it’s rebranded it’s still just has Jbj in title.
As you you say, if a band then call it a band name and focus on the band and what they are doing outside if the band as well.
But no, it’s just more money in the Jbj pot and sod the rest of the band as it’s been for last decade at least.

Jon doesnt need any pemissions from Richie or Alec. As a matter of fact, he was always the only one signed to the label. The other members are just his employees.

I wasn't talking about the stuff owned by the label. The label stuff is owned by the label end of.

My point was that if the contract didn't specify that they owned all his recordings during that period, then he can't just give away tracks as part of this club that feature Richie or Alec. It's nothing to do with the label, but if he is charging money for something (the club) and then as part of that gives away songs, for instance, that Richie co-wrote, then Richie is legally required to be paid for that, or for Richie to give his permission for it to be given away.

There is the argument that Alec and Richie were paid for their perfomances, but I don't think that really applies to a demo that the recorded in Richie's basement for instance. And it certainly doesn't apply to songwriting royalties.

There are too many variables...and i doubt it's a can of worms that Jon wants to open any time soon....

Maybe because they are only interested in doing exclusive shows, and I don't think David and Tico were very committed to doing this kind of thing, so he does it like Jon Bon Jovi. This kind of shows, everything is done as a family, it's not Matt who was running Runaway Tours and Travel to Paradise?

Did Alec perform on the demos? The box set went along just fine, it was probably Hugh on basically everything anyway.

Richie is definitely another story, with the co-writing aspect and the soured relationship between the camps.

Looking into past posts, it was switched to JBJ in the late 90's because the family had the most access to Jon specifically and could guarantee content. I remember reading some rumour the other members weren't able/didn't really want to submit much but I don't know how true that is.

I'm not disagreeing with people that it's stupid it's a fan club for him alone but complaining about something that's been in place for 20 years, meh, ya know? Supply and demand. They charge, people pay so in a sick, dirty way it's worth it's value. It's fleecing based on what they're getting but they're also happy so I don't know.
