It's a single. Aimed at enticing a wider audience than just Bon Jovi fans. (whether it's successful in achieving that is debatable/doubtful) It could represent the whole album or none of it. I'm not suggesting anyone shouldn't hope or want something fresh or original. I'm pointing out that Bon Jovi are known for this style of song. On EVERY album there are songs such as this. They may differ in production but they are there. I prefer heavier songs, decent guitar solos, emotive lyrics. But this is Bon Jovi. And you get a mixture. Some songs are throwaway, some have dubious lyrics. It's always been that way. Maybe the difference is the balance. On previous albums, especially NJ, KTF, TD, the ratio was more in favour of songs with depth, heartfelt lyrics, powerful delivery. But there were still some filler songs with lazy lyrics. (NJ & TD perhaps the exception) Let's not kid ourselves otherwise. |

I basically meant to say that with each time they do the same stuff, I, as a fan, enjoy it less and less. Given that Richie departed and how half of BB sounded, I felt it was reasonable to expect something different. So that added to the disappointment. But your points are good, I guess it simply comes down to expectations, which were higher than last time on my behalf. |
THINFS is no more or less generic than Saturday Night, the pre-release single for BB. Sure I'd love more tracks like Who Would You Die For or Teardrop, but those were not the first single.

It's late and I'm too tired to search the previous replies and see if someone already posted, so here it is. "Bon Jovi Updates" translated that article from the German Universal's site. Includes partial lyrics and comments from Jon.

The album will be the test. 12 similar songs to THINFS will be a wasted opportunity. |

I think Who Would You Die For is a better song than Saturday Night Gave Me Sunday Morning. But as a lead single hoping to catch the ear of a casual radio listener, it's pretty clear which song would get the nod. How many times do people flick radio stations if a song hasn't grabbed them within 15-20 seconds? Right or wrong that's the criteria most labels/radio stations go with. The irony (lost on the record company/maybe the band too) is that it now seems a quality album track would be just as successful commercially as the radio friendly song. The only avenue the band could take at this stage of their career that would grab a new fan base is with the hard rock/metal audience. They lost a lot of that audience before Crush. And certainly since. But they could recapture some of it had they opted for a genuine hard rock album. |
