GTFOH. Phil's vocals don't hold a candle to Richie's. Not even close.

I'd like to see Phil try to sing this with even half the power and tone as Richie.

Come on, Phil doesn't have the same bluesy tone as Richie, but that's just pure exaggeration.

Phil X & the Drills - Playing Fair - YouTube

My problem with Richie's lead vocals in the past 3 years is that he's sloppy. He mumbles, mixes words up, and his timing is totally off at times (something that Jon is very guilty of too). Even in that performance of These Days, his range sounds decent at times, but it's his performance that drags the chorus down. As the only guitarist in the Drills, Phil manages to play all the rhythm and some lead, and still sing with passion and hit fairly decent notes. I don't know that much by the Drills, so I don't know if that's even a good example. Phil's a professional in the true sense of the word - so yes I do think he can "hold a candle to" Richie's current vocals.

Comparing Richie's backing vocals and Phil's is not really fair. 2 completely different tones, voices and styles. Richie used to be the best at it, he's still great even today but Phil is a great Rock vocalist on his own. As for the live scenario, maybe I'm just optimistic but I don't really think that at any point was it even discussed that somebody should start emulating Richie, his absence wasn't hidden and there's no getting around that, might as well have whoever is there bring something different, even if the feel changes....

The great thing about this site is that you expect things that have been described to be so shitty and then you end up pleasantly surprised when you see it. Sure, his range ain't all there but his tone sounds a he'll of a lot better than last year...

Am I the only one frustrated that no clip of THINFS has come up out of this?

I don't think they played it. It would make no sense to waste a world premier on a show like this.

In the past they debuted lead singles on higher-profile promo appearances, e.g. BBC radio or Iheartradio shows (e.g. BWC, WDYG, WWBTF, etc.)
