Love that song. Kind of a sad story, especially considering how things turned out.

At this rate, My Vegas show may only have 2 different songs than Greenville did.

Let's hope for Blood On Blood or Saturday Night, at least.

Has there ever been this many consecutive shows with such little setlist variation?

You'd think they'd be sick of playing the same songs in the same order over and over and over.

Interesting that in all the stories Jon's told about writing that song about Richie he never mentioned that it had anything to do with Richie not showing up that day. Kinda messes up the line "I bet it's warm in California, I think it's time to hit the road..." for me. I always assumed he was talking about Richie there, but if Richie was supposed to show up for a writing session, he must have been on the East Coast, I guess, so that blows that.

That story actually sounds a lot like the one Jon tells about him and Des writing HBE alone because Richie was on a date with Heather. He said Richie liked that one, too, and was sorry he didn't have a hand in writing it.

The things we learn...

It's possible it was from early in the writing sessions and he didn't make the trip to the east coast, it could still make sense. I for one never took the song never to be ABOUT Richie. I think I treasure the lyrics too much to think about Jon having premonitions or whatever.

Thomas S 02-22-2017 06:45 AM

That's it?

I hate to be negative but that setlist was terrible. We lost Saturday Night & Blood On Blood and didn't get any new songs. Half of the songs in the set should be dropped (pretty much everything from LH to WSYCGH should stop being played at every show). Why doesn't Jon realise that they can still play these songs, but not all of them at every show. They're not hits, they're not deep cuts. They don't get the crowd excited, they don't promote the new album. They honestly serve no purpose. I saw Bruce in concert for the first time last night and it made me realise how awful this set is. There's no improvisation, no spontaneity, no surprise. You can go a Bon Jovi show and predict just about every song that's going to be played... and in what order.

They need a major revamp in the way they approach their sets, with only a few songs (Prayer, Wanted, Bad Name, Bad Medicine) being played at every show and ALL of the other songs should be rotated.

Except that I think both Jon and Richie have gone on record saying that it's about Richie; but I'd have to check. I've slept since then. But I didn't get the impression that it had anything to do with premonitions. :)

What does being from the early sessions have to do Richie not making the trip... I'm sleepy and may be missing something here.

I was distracted by the other garbage songs in the set (Sleep, BWC, and Who Says primarily) but happy that Working Man has been dropped, at least tonight

Sorry, what I meant was if they were planning on writing for the week and Richie doesn't fly over I assumed it would be from earlier in the week. You were right, if it was middle of the session odds are he'd be on the same coast. I was trying to find a way for that lyric to make sense.

They've def both gone on record about it, I just have a really hard time thinking of how those lyrics apply to Richie. Unless we're talking abut Jon writing about Richie and his dad from Richie's perspective then I for sure see it.

Sorry, Who Says was a big ol' hit here. They have every reason to keep doing it in North America but every reason to drop it everywhere else.

Walleris 02-22-2017 07:43 AM

Surely Lay Your Hands is the next one to get dropped and Captain Crash will likely be its replacement.

bounce442 02-22-2017 09:15 AM

I'm back. It was fun, but bitter sweet. Jon is every bit the frontman he was 10-17 years ago. I didn't really notice any autopilot. He was "there" and he kept the crowd entertained. He seemed happy to be here and grateful we bought tickets.

As you've seen, the set wasn't great. Work was out and WWBTF is back... which I was good with. With the state Jon's vocals were in tonight, I'm not sure if I would have wanted to hear BOB or Saturday Night.

His storyteller section with the new songs (Mess, Scars, Devil) went over really well, mainly because of his communication with the crowd. He was chatty. Out of the 3, Scars went over best (cell phones lights everywhere) and Devil was the low point out of the 3, but IMO it was pretty damn good. He made the same comment after, "From now on, hits and nothing but the hits for the rest of the night"

The two songs I was most excited to see were Rollercoaster and We Don't Run. We Don't Run ended up being my favorite song of the night... it was almost worth the price of the ticket. Speaking of WDR... I hadn't heard any more about Jon's political comments a week or two ago but I think I might have figured it out... towards the beginning of WDR the graphics show "Great Again! Great Again! ...Nothing lasts forever" I don't know... but that may have been it. Again, it was great.

Yes, he stopped the band during the first verse of bad medicine. He said he started singing the 2nd verse... And yes, he blamed it on a "senior moment". They started the song over. Toward the end of the song, he said something like, "I'm going to get a kiss" and he climbed off stage, walked along the front row - I didn't see it but the crowd got louder for a moment.

Oh yeah, there are no screens this tour. They have a great light show and some sort of fabric (that graphics are projected on) that falls for a few songs (WDR to Guitar), but that's it. First BJ show I've seen without screens.

The Lost Highway and WLOL combo was the low point for the crowd, I'd say. Vocally, WSYCGH, BM, BTBMB, and HAND were pretty bad... okay really bad. His vocal mix was pretty low and the band covered for him as much as they could. He looked like he was in so much pain. You can tell he's trying. I believe he gave it 100% but his voice is gone.

My kids had fun. They got tired around SWID (bed time), but would bounce back for the songs they liked. They did really well for a 4 and 6 year old.

Next stop Dallas... here's hoping Ghost will get its tour debut.

Yep fair enough, but I still don't think it should get played at every show. The problem is that there are so many songs that they have every reason to keep doing, that there is barely any room for variation

Glad you had a good time, despite the flaws! :-)

That sequence in WDR is one thing I mentioned on the other thread back then, but sadly nobody noticed or replied to it. On one video, the word "GREAT" even turned into "RAT" for a second, then out fo the lyrics they just showed some words, including "DEVIL", and so on. Can definitely see some political motivation on Jon's part here ;-)

Good to hear! I've been thinking about taking my then 5 year old daughter to the show next year, if they do come to Europe, but have been indecisive so far as to whether that's something for kids to enjoy or not. I'll probably give it a shot ;-)

Yes it should, because it's been the last big hit they had, IIRC. But I'd move it to the end of the main set, just makes more sense there ;-)

Jeeper 02-22-2017 11:41 AM

Poor sets. Really feel for Jon. He's obviously tried to work on his voice, but barring a miracle, it's pretty much done. At least people still seem to be enjoying the concert experience.
