I hate to be the party popper but that IBTFY was bad, I had to stop after a couple of minutes. Half shouted, half drowned by all the other vocals. Even the band sounded like a cover band on this one. Could be the video quality, but there was something off and the guitars were not helping (why is Shanks playing lead on this one??).
I don't care if it was better than a horrible version. I don't even care about the minimal vocal improvement that lasts for 30% of the show. I'm still shocked to see how much Jon has lost it. He used to sing with ease, he might not have hit all the notes during the 2008-2011 period, but he didn't look as if he was struggling and there was such conviction in the delivery. You got sucked into the performance.
Watching Memory from the other day, man, it's SO SAD. I remember how Jon used to sell those slow songs that required a connection with the audience. The "acting" during Hallelujah was a little bit over the top, but I doubt many people sat and check the phones during that performance.
His voice being gone sucks. But his stage presence, the hunger that was still present in 2010-11, the rock attitude... that's gone and it's fvcking tragic. That's why the vocal improvement makes little difference to me, I know that even if the improvement reached decent levels, the attitude won't make a comeback and it's probably due to aging and having nothing else to prove, it could have happened anyway with Richie once they got into the RNRHOF. But that's what worked for me.
