He's not, Phil is. And you're allowed to have a different opinion but I'm gonna have to respectfully disagree, I found that to be a good performance. If they changed the backing vocals and put Everett backing Jon up rather than Phil I think that performance would have been great!!

I was there. Sixth row center.

I was floored when Jon began IBTFY for the first encore. He’s still got it. And then BOB! It was crazy! They left and came back for the second encore of Wanted and LOAP.

He’s improved greatly since I saw him at St Paul exactly one year ago - vocally and stage presence. He’s not done yet - IMHO.

More later after I settle in back home...

Don’t get me wrong, they are damn lucky to have Phil. The guy is rocking the hell out of boring songs, he’s constantly promoting the band, he’s a joy to watch. His guitar playing doesn’t have to sound like Richie’s and it’s working for a lot of people. He’s doing what he’s paid to do and doing it with a big smile and an awesome attitude. I have no problem with Phil other than he’s just a guy who plays guitar in BJ, not the other half of what truly made the band. (Phil's vocals are very meh though. They should use Everett more, that's true)

I also don’t post because I take pleasure in complaining and bitching about details. I rarely watch any of their shows anymore because I know I’m not going to like them. But I don’t want to believe that this is it. When somebody praises a performance, I can’t help but give it a try even though I know I’m not going to care about the vocals (I’ll admit I’m very hard to please on that front) because I’m still hoping for a glimpse of something that still existed 5 years ago. Not 10, or 20.

I was watching a No Apologies performance from 2010 and it made me think of WWWU, both songs are far from masterpieces, but with the right attitude they can kick ass live and bring energy to the setlist. If Jon still had the attitude, WWWU (or any decent song from THINFS) would sound vocally as bad as it does now, but performance-wise it’d make such a huge difference and it would make the repetitive and short setlists easier to enjoy.
But for lots of people the whole "getting down to touch the audience and treat some female fans” shtick is working like a charm and they’ll probably choose it over a singer who delivers with passion and attitude but won't interact like this. And I guess they are right to feel this way too, the band has changed and what worked for me then maybe didn't for them and the way things are now is creating new fans or bringing older fans back to the band, who knows.

But I can't help feeling that there still has to be something left for all of us who are missing the spark. That this isn't how it ends.

Symbeline,

May I ask - when was the last live show you attended? Not just a You Tube viewing?

JBJ and band kicked ass last night in St Paul, when witnessed in person right down front.

I was at the show last night! Let me start out by saying that in the past, I would take alot of pictures. This time I only did that when they sang the very few songs I don't enjoy the most. So, I was able to watch the band interaction and Jon way more than usual and I'm glad I made that choice. Jon was very energetic and interacted alot with the band (even Tico). I think he truly was having a great time. Crowd was very lively and Jon said it was "honestly" better than NJ. Many of the crowd was even enjoying LH, WLOL, and BTF. If they were to replace songs, I would much rather it be LH and BTF. I really like WLOL. IMHO, I think alot of the YT and FB videos are really off on the sound, because I thought he sounded really good on BOR and IBTFY. I saw them in 2013 and honestly thought it was about the same as then sound wise.
On to the best part, when Jon went out to sing BOR he walked right in front of me twice. I was in the 2nd row, but the kind lady and gentleman in front of me said it was ok for me to stand beside them when he came back so I took a quick hop over the seat and squeezed in between them.Quick suggestion, if anyone else tries to do that in the future do it right away. I would of used the stairs but they put garbage pails out to block the stairway and wouldn't let anyone coming back from there potty/drink breaks go back to their seat on the floor until he was done. Others walked down the stairs to get closer looks too. And before anyone says anything rude, yep I'm a Jon girl all the way and wasn't going to let one row difference after 32 years following them, stand in my way. It all payed off in the end and yes Jon took hold of my hand and smiled at me. And I'm darned happy about it. I was almost on that full version video but Jon jumped down and the video taper ended the song before he got to the end where I was.So, if anyone finds any full version BOR please put them here. I haven't found any anywhere yet. And also right before the encore I think, someone from BJ security came over to my seat and gave me a guitar pick. Do they always come out and give picks to people on the sides of the arena? I'm just curious about that because I thought only people on the floor by the stage got them? Also what is the difference in the colors? Mine is white and says Bon Jovi. Anyway, just had to share my story and yep no one needs to tell me I'm crazy because I already know I am! :p

So glad you got your moment with Jon! It was a great night, wasn’t it?! I wrote my review but lost it. Will do again. I’ll let you know if I see more video.

Stop drinking too much wine, it makes you too melancholy :D
While I usually agree with you, this was actually an okay performance. As Walleris rightfully pointed out, it fell apart after the solo vocally. They won't stop sounding like a cover band on the older stuff because there simply are too many hired guns on the stage by now.
And as much as I liked that Jon and Richie shared the stage on the Hall of Fame, the quality of their performance wasn't any better either.

The last of my take on the concert. Again, sixth row center.

- Jon is back to being a frontman. Moves around and looks very happy. One year ago at St Paul he was stuck at his mic stand and was struggling. Not this time at all. There was a little vocal struggle now and then, but he’s going non stop for 2.5 hours.

- He said St Paul was more enthusiastic than New Jersey. I really think he meant it. From my vantage point, no one sat down. Even the nosebleeds stayed on their feet.

- He was surprised to see John Lassman, former WAPP program director in the front row. Jon told the DJ story and did an extra long intro throwback to Runway. If having John Lassman in the front row, who now works in Minneapolis, made Jon ramp up his showmanship then we all benefited. He was on fire and gave it his all. (Not what I saw a year ago from JBJ.) JBJ has his showmanship back.

- The audio on the first two songs sounded rough. After JBJ talked like he was upset into his mike to the techs, the sound improved.

- I’ve said many times. I’m the exact same age as JBJ. I’m damn impressed of the energy he has, that he gives 150%. No he doesn’t sound like he used to, but haven’t we all changed through the years.

- But he did sound good. Getting IBTFY and BOB as encore one was unreal. Second encore of Wanted and LOAP was still the BJ magic.

- JBJ looks fantastic. Yes that’s part of being a rock star. If the way he keeps himself in excellent shape (how many men have even looked that good when they were half his age) and he still has the drive to keep performing, good for him and us. He’s still working his ass off and I appreciate that greatly.

- Being front and center is not like viewing on You Tube at all.

A long time ago, but I’m comparing shows I didn’t go to, so I don’t see what it has to do with anything. I also think it’s more objective (quality-wise) to judge a performance that you didn’t attend because that could add a layer of enjoyment and you can’t (and shouldn’t) concentrate on the negative when you are there.

But I digress, my point wasn’t at all to imply that those who attend the THINFS tour and enjoy the shows are wrong and I’m right. It’s just that it’s not for me anymore, I feel very disconnected from this band and I wouldn’t bother to check the shows to see if there’s still hope if I didn’t really want the band to work for me again. I wouldn’t watch just to scrutinize every single detail and be argumentative for the sake of being argumentative. Or maybe I would, when I first discovered this board in 2004 (I think) there were people complaining about performances, songs, Jon’s voice... Some of those users are still around and still complaining. So maybe that’s my future, yelling at poor recent BJ fans that don’t know any better because I’ve been sucked into this negativity hole for too long. I was actually active in other boards starting in 2000ish that were as negative as this one, so I can't help it, I don't know how to be a cheerful and positive fan anymore, is there a doctor in the house? :p

But in all honesty, I don’t want this to be how BJ will be remembered. Because y’all know that as long as their tours are successful they’ll keep touring until the end of time and in 20 years people would look back and actually dare to compare this current incarnation to the original band. I still can’t wrap my head around that possibility, of all the bands I’ve followed this is the only one I thought would never fall into that. Oh well.

Show me an actual scientific study that proves that. Good wine is just grape juice with a little extra punch. 5 a day remember, keeps your mind sharp and body young. Wine is actually an important part of the healthiest diet of all, isn't it? There's a reason why we Mediterraneans have higher "recommended" alcohol units per person. You are mistaking the cheap wine you northerners drink by the gallon when visiting warm lands, the kind of wine that gives you the worst headache and makes you cry bitter tears of regret the next morning ;) I don't drink that, ever, therefore it's not the wine making me miserable.

Totally agree about the HOF and I'll go even further and say *I* wouldn't want Richie back, he's clearly not fitted for the band or that kind of live anymore. What I want are the good times back and that's plain wishful thinking. It just wouldn't be the same. It sucks to have the band end like this. It sucks to miss Richie so much but at the same time to know it's for the best.

When I watch the current performances I feel they lack the BJ-ness that kept me a fan through all the disappointment of the Shanks era. It wasn't that great in 2013 with Richie on board. That was the moment my disconnect from the band started. But at the same time it is impossible to enjoy something if you are missing a key ingredient. Not very objective, I know.
